اشتغل ishtaghal: work

Lebanese اشتغلishtaghal means “work,” both for people doing a job and for devices functioning. It is a Form VIII verb, but its ordinary meaning is lexical: it does not mean “work oneself,” and its historical pattern does not predict which preposition follows.

English uses work in many phrasal combinations. Lebanese divides them by frame: work at/in a place with بـ, work with someone using مع, and work on a task using على. A machine normally becomes the subject when it functions: الجهاز اشتغل “the device worked/came on.”

Perfect paradigm

The perfect keeps the visible شتغل sequence throughout. Short linking vowels make the suffixed forms pronounceable; the initial supporting vowel belongs to the unsuffixed citation form but is often absent before connected prefixes or in rapid clusters.

اشتغلت المكنة ساعتين وبعدين وقفت فجأة.

ishtaghalit el-makane sēʿtēn w-baʿdēn wiʾfit fazhʾa.

The machine ran for two hours and then stopped suddenly. (neutral; inanimate 3sg.f functioning)

💡
Do not interpret Form VIII as a reflexive instruction. اشتغل is simply the established Lebanese verb “work/function”; learn its actual frames rather than adding حاله.

b-imperfect and bare imperfect

The b-imperfect principal part is بيشتغلbyishtaghel. The shift from perfect -ghal to imperfect -ghel is lexical and must be stored; unvocalized Arabic does not show it.

رح يشتغل عالنسخة الجديدة بعد ما يخلص الاجتماع.

raḥ yishtaghel ʿan-noskha l-zhdīde baʿd ma ykhalliṣ el-izhtimēʿ.

He'll work on the new version after the meeting ends. (professional; bare 3sg.m after رح)

For an event unfolding now, the Beirut baseline uses عم + b-imperfect: عم بيشتغل. The b-form alone more naturally gives a habit, occupation, or characteristic functioning. See the progressive system for the discourse contrast.

Imperative and negation

The positive command is اشتغل to one man, اشتغلي to one woman, and اشتغلوا to a group. It can be practical encouragement, an instruction to resume work, or a rebuke; tone matters. Negative commands use ما + bare imperfect.

AddresseePositiveNegative
one manاشتغل ishtaghelما تشتغل ma tishtaghel
one womanاشتغلي ishtaghleما تشتغلي ma tishtaghle

اشتغلوا عالجزء الصعب سوا وما تشتغلوا كل واحد لحاله.

ishtaghlo ʿal-zhozʾ eṣ-ṣaʿeb sawa w-ma tishtaghlo kill wāḥad la-ḥālo.

Work on the difficult part together; don't each work on your own. (neutral instruction to a group)

Workplace and profession frames

Use بـ for the employer, workplace, field, or institutional setting: بيشتغل بشركة، بمستشفى، بالتسويق. Use عند when the employer is conceptualized as a person or firm one works for. A profession may follow directly in ordinary speech: بيشتغل مهندس “he works as an engineer.” Formal كـ occurs in professional writing, but it need not be imported into everyday conversation.

هاي أختي؛ بتشتغل مهندسة بشركة طاقة ببيروت.

hāy okhte; btishtaghel mhandse b-shirket ṭāʾa b-Bayrūt.

This is my sister; she works as an engineer at an energy company in Beirut. (informal; beginner هاي, profession and employer)

اشتغل عند خاله بالمطبعة قبل ما يفتح مكتبه.

ishtaghal ʿind khālo bil-maṭbaʿa ʾabel ma yiftaḥ maktabo.

He worked for his maternal uncle at the print shop before opening his own office. (informal; employer with عند)

English What do you do? is naturally شو بتعمل؟ in many occupation conversations, while وين بتشتغل؟ asks where someone works and شو بتشتغل؟ asks what work they do. No one English question maps mechanically to every Lebanese context.

Work on a task: على and its clitics

A task, file, or problem normally follows على: اشتغلت عالتقرير. If the task is pronominal, attach the suffix to the preposition, not directly to the verb: اشتغلت عليه / عليها / عليهن. This is the central “object-clitic” fact for this mostly intransitive verb.

ReferentNatural formMeaning
masculine taskاشتغلت عليه ishtaghalet ʿalēI worked on it
feminine taskاشتغلت عليها ishtaghalet ʿalēhaI worked on it
plural tasksاشتغلت عليهن ishtaghalet ʿalēhonI worked on them
coworkerاشتغلت معه ishtaghalet maʿoI worked with him

الخطة بعدها ناقصة، بس اشتغلنا عليها منيح اليوم.

el-khiṭṭa baʿda nāʾṣa, bass ishtaghalna ʿalēha mnīḥ el-yōm.

The plan is still incomplete, but we worked on it well today. (professional; prepositional object clitic)

Direct اشتغلته is not the general equivalent of English “worked on it.” A shift or job can occasionally be promoted as a lexical direct object in some speakers' usage (informal, construction-specific), but learners should use اشتغل فيه / عليه according to meaning.

Devices and the participle مشتغل

With a device as subject, اشتغل means “worked, started working, came on.” It does not take an object naming the person who activated it; for “turn it on,” use causative شغّله.

بعد ما غيرت السلك اشتغل الراوتر وصار النت أسرع.

baʿd ma ghayyaret es-silik ishtaghal er-rāwtar w-ṣār en-net asraʿ.

After I changed the cable, the router started working and the internet became faster. (informal; device functioning)

Active participle مشتغلmishtaghel most naturally describes a person as employed or engaged in work. Some speakers also extend it to something operating, but ordinary Beirut device-state descriptions strongly favor شغّال / مش شغّال. مشتغل is a state predicate and is negated with مش; for a current visible activity, finite عم بيشتغل is usually more direct.

أخي مشتغل بمحل تياب، بس هالأسبوع مش عم بيشتغل لأنو مريض.

akhe mishtaghel b-maḥall tyēb, bass hal-osbūʿ mish ʿam byishtaghel laʾanno mrīḍ.

My brother is employed at a clothing shop, but this week he isn't working because he's sick. (informal; employment state versus current activity)

💡
Keep the causative contrast: الجهاز اشتغل “the device worked/came on,” but شغّلته “I turned it on.” English work it does not license a direct object on اشتغل.

Common Mistakes

Guessing the imperfect vowel

❌ هو بيشتغال بمصرف.

Incorrect — the verified b-imperfect is بيشتغل byishtaghel.

✅ هو بيشتغل بمصرف قريب من هون.

huwwe byishtaghel b-maṣraf ʾarīb min hōn.

He works at a bank near here.

Dropping the task preposition

❌ عم بيشتغل التقرير الجديد.

Incorrect for ‘working on the report’ — a task takes على.

✅ عم بيشتغل عالتقرير الجديد بالمكتب.

ʿam byishtaghel ʿat-taʾrīr el-zhdīd bil-maktab.

He's working on the new report at the office.

Making the verb reflexive

❌ اشتغلت حالي كل النهار.

Incorrect English-influenced analysis — اشتغل needs no reflexive object.

✅ اشتغلت كل النهار وأخدت استراحة قصيرة.

ishtaghalet kill en-nhār w-akhadet istirāḥa ʾṣīra.

I worked all day and took a short break.

Translating an English phrasal verb literally

❌ الخطة اشتغلت لبرا بالنهاية.

Incorrect calque of ‘worked out’ — use زبطت for a plan that succeeded.

✅ الخطة زبطت بالنهاية رغم كل التأخير.

el-khiṭṭa zabaṭit bin-nihēye raghm kill et-taʾkhīr.

The plan worked out in the end despite all the delay.

Key Takeaways

Learn اشتغل–بيشتغل–اشتغل with its real frames. بـ introduces a workplace or field, مع a coworker, and على a task; pronominal tasks stay on the preposition. People work, devices function, مشتغل describes an employed or engaged state, and ordinary device states favor شغّال. English phrasal uses of work require separate Lebanese verbs and collocations.
