Lebanese بعت / بيبعتbaʿat / byibaʿat is the ordinary verb “send.” It is morphologically strong—the three consonants ب-ع-ت remain available throughout the paradigm—but the final t meets subject endings and clitics in ways that sound denser than the spelling suggests. In بعتbaʿatt “I sent,” for example, the root's t and the first-person ending merge into a long consonant.
Sending also has two participant roles that English often leaves unmarked: the theme is the thing sent, and the recipient is the person receiving it. Lebanese makes the theme a direct object but normally marks a full recipient with لـ. When both roles are pronouns, one cannot simply stack two English-style objects on the verb.
This spoken verb is neutral in conversation, messages, and ordinary professional interaction. Formal written Arabic normally uses أرسل (formal); it is not the production model here. For the two-pronoun system, see two objects.
Complete perfect paradigm
The perfect reports a completed act of sending. Because unvocalized Arabic normally omits shadda, written بعت can represent 3sg.m baʿat “he sent” or 1sg/2sg.m baʿatt “I/you sent.” The subject and spoken consonant length resolve the ambiguity.
| Person | Form | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| أنا | بعت | baʿatt |
| إنت | بعت | baʿatt |
| إنتي | بعتي | baʿatte |
| هو | بعت | baʿat |
| هي | بعتت | baʿatit |
| نحنا | بعتنا | baʿatna |
| إنتو | بعتوا | baʿatto |
| هني | بعتوا | baʿato |
بعتت نادين النسخة المصححة للفريق قبل الاجتماع.
baʿatit Nādīn en-noskha l-moṣaḥḥaḥa lil-farīʾ ʾabel el-izhtimēʿ.

بعتنا الدعوات بكير، بس تلاتة بعدن ما ردوا.
baʿatna d-daʿawāt bkīr, bass tlēte baʿdon ma raddo.
We sent the invitations early, but three people still haven't replied. (neutral; first-person plural perfect)
There is a second ambiguity. بعت read biʿt is “I/you sold,” from hollow باع. Messages, files, destinations, and recipients favor “send”; goods, buyers, and prices favor “sell.” The باع reference gives the contrasting paradigm.
Complete b-imperfect and bare imperfect
The b-imperfect has the lexical stem -bʿat-. First person ببعت begins with the b-indicative prefix immediately before root ب; this is not a typo. The bare imperfect follows رح، لازم، بدّي، فيني and similar selectors.
| Person | b-imperfect | Bare imperfect |
|---|---|---|
| أنا | ببعت bibʿat | ابعت ibʿat |
| إنت | بتبعت btibʿat | تبعت tibʿat |
| إنتي | بتبعتي btibʿate | تبعتي tibʿate |
| هو | بيبعت byibaʿat | يبعت yibʿat |
| هي | بتبعت btibʿat | تبعت tibʿat |
| نحنا | منبعت mnibʿat | نبعت nibʿat |
| إنتو | بتبعتوا btibʿato | تبعتوا tibʿato |
| هني | بيبعتوا byibʿato | يبعتوا yibʿato |
كل جمعة بيبعت المدير ملخص صغير لكل الموظفين.
kill zhomʿa byibaʿat el-mdīr molakhkhaṣ zghīr la-kill el-mwaẓẓafīn.
Every Friday the manager sends a short summary to all the employees. (neutral habitual)
فينا نبعت الطرد اليوم إذا بتعطينا العنوان كامل.
fīna nibʿat eṭ-ṭard el-yōm iza btiʿṭīna l-ʿonwēn kēmel.
We can send the package today if you give us the full address. (neutral; bare first-person plural after فينا)
For a current transmission, course-baseline Lebanese uses عم + b-imperfect: عم ببعت الملف “I'm sending the file.” A plain b-form often describes a routine or an immediate contextually arranged action.
Imperative and participant frame
The positive commands are ابعتibʿat, ابعتيibʿate, and ابعتواibʿato. In rapid speech, especially before a clitic, the initial support vowel may be light, which is why everyday writing also shows بعتلي “send me.” The careful paradigm below keeps the transparent initial alif.
| Addressee | Positive | Negative |
|---|---|---|
| one man | ابعت ibʿat | ما تبعت ma tibʿat |
| one woman | ابعتي ibʿate | ما تبعتي ma tibʿate |
| a group | ابعتوا ibʿato | ما تبعتوا ma tibʿato |
ابعتيلي الموقع عالواتساب لما توصلي.
ibʿatīle l-mawʾeʿ ʿal-Wātsāb lamma tūṣale.
Send me the location on WhatsApp when you arrive. (informal; feminine command and recipient clitic)
With two full nouns, the theme normally precedes لـ + recipient: بعت الملف لمايا. A pronominal recipient attaches through لـ: بعتلها الملف. A pronominal theme can attach directly: بعته لمايا. If both are pronouns, use يا- for one of them: بعتلها ياه “I sent it.m to her,” or keep the recipient analytic: بعته إلها.
| Theme | Recipient | Natural packaging |
|---|---|---|
| full noun | full noun | بعت الملف لمايا |
| full noun | pronoun | بعتلها الملف |
| pronoun | full noun | بعته لمايا |
| pronoun | pronoun | بعتلها ياه / بعته إلها |
لقيت العقد وبعتلها ياه بالإيميل من شوي.
lʾēt el-ʿaʾed w-baʿattilha yē bil-īmēl min shwayy.
I found the contract and sent it to her by email a little while ago. (neutral professional context; recipient clitic plus masculine theme)
Object clitics and digital messages
The direct theme suffix attaches to the verb. Because بعت has several possible subject readings, the resulting word can also be ambiguous; romanization and context distinguish بعتهbaʿato “he sent it” from baʿatto “I/you sent it.”
| Form | Reading | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| بعته | baʿato | he sent it.m / him |
| بعته | baʿatto | I/you.m sent it.m / him |
| بعتها | baʿata | he sent it.f / her |
| بيبعتها | byibaʿata | he sends it.f / her |
| ابعتهم | ibʿaton | send them! |
In digital life, the verb combines naturally with رسالة، لينك، فايل، صورة، الموقع and channel phrases such as عالواتساب، بالإيميل. بعتلي خبر is idiomatic “let me know / get back to me”; it does not require a literal item called “news.”
إذا تغير الموعد، بعتلي خبر قبلها بكم ساعة.
iza tghayyar el-mawʿed, baʿatle khabar ʾabla b-kamm sēʿa.
If the time changes, let me know a few hours beforehand. (informal idiom)
عم ببعتلك الصور وحدة وحدة لأنو الإنترنت بطيء.
ʿam bibʿatlak eṣ-ṣowar waḥde waḥde laʾanno l-internet baṭīʾ.
I'm sending you the photos one by one because the internet is slow. (informal digital context; progressive)
Active participle
The active participle is باعتbēʿet, feminine باعتةbēʿte, plural باعتينbēʿtīn. It presents the sending as already accomplished and relevant to the current situation. The finite perfect is still the neutral narrative choice.
This participle is genuinely difficult in unvocalized writing: masculine باعت is also the spelling and Beirut reading of “she sold,” from باع. A sent object or following complement favors the participle of “send”; goods and a buyer or price favor “sold.”
مايا باعتة العنوان من مبارح، فتشي بالمحادثة القديمة.
Māya bēʿte l-ʿonwēn min mbēreḥ, fattishe bil-muḥādase l-ʾdīme.
Maya sent the address yesterday; look in the old chat. (informal; feminine result-relevant participle)
Common Mistakes
Leaving a full recipient unmarked
❌ بعت الملف مايا قبل الاجتماع.
Incorrect — a full recipient normally takes لـ.
✅ بعت الملف لمايا قبل الاجتماع وطلبت منها تأكدلي إنو وصل.
baʿatt el-malaf la-Māya ʾabel el-izhtimēʿ w-ṭalabt minha tʾakkedle inno wiṣel.
I sent the file to Maya before the meeting and asked her to confirm that it arrived.
Stacking two pronominal objects
❌ بعتلهاه عالواتساب.
Incorrect — recipient ـلها and theme ـه do not stack directly on this verb.
✅ بعتلها ياه عالواتساب وقالتلي إنو فتحته.
baʿattilha yē ʿal-Wātsāb w-ʾāletle inno fataḥito.
I sent it to her on WhatsApp, and she told me she opened it.
Confusing “sent” with “sold”
❌ بعت السيارة لأخي بالإيميل.
Semantically incoherent for ordinary ‘sent the car’; unvocalized بعت must be interpreted through its frame.
✅ بعت صورة السيارة لأخي بالإيميل مشان يشوفها.
baʿatt ṣūret es-sayyāra la-akhe bil-īmēl mishēn yshūfa.
I sent a photo of the car to my brother by email so he could see it.
Adding b- after a modal
❌ فيك بتبعتلي اللوكيشن؟
Incorrect — فيك selects the bare imperfect تبعت.
✅ فيك تبعتلي اللوكيشن قبل ما اطلع من البيت؟
fīk tibʿatle l-lōkēshan ʾabel ma ṭlaʿ min el-bēt?
Can you send me the location before I leave the house?
Translating English send in word by word
❌ بعت الطلب لجوا قبل ما تخلص المهلة.
Incorrect literal rendering of ‘sent the application in’ — submitting an application normally uses قدّم.
✅ قدمت الطلب قبل ما تخلص المهلة وبعتولي تأكيد.
ʾaddamt eṭ-ṭalab ʾabel ma tikhlaṣ el-mohle w-baʿatūle taʾkīd.
I submitted the application before the deadline, and they sent me a confirmation.
Key Takeaways
Store بعت–بيبعت–ابعت as baʿat–byibaʿat–ibʿat, and hear the doubled t in first- and second-person perfect forms. The theme is direct; a full recipient takes لـ. With two pronouns, use يا- or a separate recipient phrase rather than stacking suffixes. Digital بعتلي خبر means “let me know,” while result-relevant باعت/باعتة describes a send whose consequence still matters now.
