This Elon-authored original is a fictional phone exchange between Rana and Sami at an invented delivery service. The order, promised times, records, and complaint number are classroom details, not facts about a real company.
The dialogue models an accountable complaint: Rana identifies the failed commitment, supplies evidence, distinguishes what she observed from what an employee told her, and asks for a checkable remedy. Her firmness increases when needed, but neither speaker abandons rapport. Politeness here does not mean accepting an unclear answer.

marḥaba, ʿam bidoʾʾ b-khṣūṣ ṭalabiyye kēn lāzem tūṣal mbēreḥ w-ma wiṣlit.
Rana: Hello. I'm calling about an order that was supposed to arrive yesterday and didn't.
ahla fīke. akīd btʾakkadlik minna; fīke tiʿṭīne raʾm eṭ-ṭalabiyye?
Sami: Hello. Of course, I'll check it for you. Can you give me the order number? (to a woman)
raʾma mawzhūd b-har-risēle, w-maktūb inno t-tawṣīl mbēreḥ bēn et-tlēte wil-khamse.
Rana: Its number is in this message, and it says delivery was yesterday between three and five. (fictional evidence and time)
laḥẓa law samaḥte... mbayyen ʿinde inno s-sēʾeʾ sazhzhal el-ʿenwēn nāʾeṣ.
Sami: One moment, please... It shows here that the driver recorded the address as incomplete.
bass el-ʿenwēn kēmel bir-risēle, w-mbēreḥ ḥkēt maʿo las-sēʾeʾ w-akkadle inno maʿo l-mawʾeʿ.
Rana: But the address is complete in the message, and yesterday I spoke with the driver; he confirmed that he had the location. (Beirut clitic doubling)
maʿik ḥaʾʾ, es-sizhill wir-risēle mish mitṭābʾīn. baʿtizer minnik ʿa-hal-khabṣa.
Sami: You're right; the record and the message don't match. I apologize for this mix-up. (to a woman)
fīne rattiblik tawṣīl zhdīd bokra bēn el-ʿashara wit-tnēsh bla rsūm.
Sami: I can arrange a new delivery tomorrow between ten and twelve with no fee. (fictional remedy and time)
mnīḥ, bass kīf fīna nitʾakkad inno ma raḥ yinʿād nafs et-taʾkhīr?
Rana: Good, but how can we make sure the same delay won't happen again?
raḥ ḍīf mlāḥaẓa ʿal-ʿenwēn w-bibʿatlik taʾkīd maktūb hallaʾ.
Sami: I'll add a note to the address and send you written confirmation now.
tamēm. w-iza ma wiṣilne t-taʾkīd el-yōm, badde raʾm shakwa la-atēbaʿa maʿ el-moshref.
Rana: All right. If the confirmation doesn't reach me today, I want a complaint number so I can follow it up with the supervisor.
akīd. raḥ aʿṭīke raʾm mtēbaʿa min hallaʾ: sabʿa w-ʿishrīn.
Sami: Of course. I'll give you a tracking number now: twenty-seven. (invented classroom number)
shokran. hayk byikūn el-ḥall wāḍeḥ w-baʾdar tēbeʿ eṭ-ṭalabiyye.
Rana: Thank you. This way the solution is clear and I can track the order.

The encounter keeps one Beirut service voice. The course’s demonstratives are هاد/هاي; common Lebanese هيدا/هيدي (regional: Lebanon) are coherent alternatives when identifying a message or request. Do not “regionalize” a complaint by stacking Lebanese, Syrian, Palestinian, and Jordanian markers; clarity comes from stable reference and evidence.
Evidence keeps firmness accountable
Rana does not begin with a motive claim such as “you ignored me.” She contrasts كان لازم توصل with ما وصلت, then points to the message and its fictional window. Later she separates two sources: what is مكتوب and what the driver أكدلي. This lets Sami compare records instead of arguing about attitude.
The form كان لازم توصل presents an unrealized past obligation or expectation. It is not the same as لازم توصل بكرا, a present requirement about tomorrow. The negative perfect ما وصلت reports the bounded nonarrival.
Clitic doubling reactivates the known driver
In حكيت معه للسائق, ـه on معه and السائق refer to the same already established person. The لـ before السائق licenses the full doubled complement in this Beirut pattern; it does not mean “for the driver.” There is no pause-sized detached topic.
The neutral undoubled alternative حكيت مع السائق is also grammatical. The doubled form is useful here because the service record has just introduced “the driver,” and Rana reactivates that salient referent. This construction is (regional: Beirut/Lebanon) and has different distributions elsewhere in the Levant; see clitic doubling.
Reported commitments and responsibility
أكدلي إنو معه الموقع reports the driver’s earlier assurance without putting invented quotation marks around a paraphrase. مكتوب إنو التوصيل... similarly attributes the promised window to the message. Direct quotation would claim exact wording and is unnecessary.
Sami’s response is accountable because it names a verifiable mismatch—السجل والرسالة مش متطابقين—before apologizing. بعتذر منك receives the complaint; it does not erase the need for a remedy.
Escalation can preserve rapport
Rana first accepts the proposed window with منيح، بس..., then asks how recurrence will be prevented. When she mentions a supervisor, she makes escalation conditional: إذا ما وصلني التأكيد اليوم. The requested complaint number creates a record; it is not a threat to punish an individual.
Sami does not demand that she “wait and see.” He provides a tracking number immediately. Rana closes only after she can identify the next delivery window, written confirmation, and follow-up path.
Transformation and repair task
Transform the delivery problem into a fictional duplicate charge. Keep observation, evidence, and remedy separate:
عندي عمليتين بنفس المبلغ عالكشف، مع إني دفعت مرة وحدة.
ʿinde ʿamaliytēn b-nafs el-mablagh ʿal-kashf, maʿ inne dfaʿt marra waḥde.
I have two transactions for the same amount on the statement, although I paid only once. (fictional billing evidence)
fīne oṭlob taʾkīd maktūb inno l-ʿamaliyye t-tēnye raḥ tinlagha?
Can I request written confirmation that the second transaction will be canceled?
ʾaṣde r-risēle btʾakked el-ilgha, walla bass btʾakked innkon fataḥto ṭ-ṭalab?
I mean, does the message confirm cancellation, or only confirm that you opened the request? (repairing an ambiguous 'confirmation')
The repair repeats the disputed noun تأكيد through two candidate meanings. It prevents a vague “yes” from closing the issue prematurely.
Recycling map
| Earlier tool | Text example | Service function |
|---|---|---|
| clitic doubling | حكيت معه للسائق | reactivate a salient person |
Common Mistakes
Making a complaint without identifying the failed commitment
Unaccountable complaint—the general judgment gives the representative no specific event to verify.
er-risēle ʾālet et-tawṣīl ʾabel el-khamse, w-hallaʾ es-sēʿa sitte w-ma wiṣel.
The message said delivery before five; it's now six and it hasn't arrived. (specific fictional discrepancy)
Omitting the clitic from the doubled pattern
Incorrect—the integrated Beirut doubling pattern needs معه; otherwise use neutral مع السائق.
ḥkēt maʿo las-sēʾeʾ ʿan el-ʿenwēn el-zhdīd.
I spoke with the driver about the new address. (Beirut doubling)
Keeping b- after رح
Incorrect after رح—the future marker takes a bare imperfect.
ʾālle inno ṭ-ṭalab raḥ yūṣal bokra ʾabel eḍ-ḍoher.
He told me the order will arrive tomorrow before noon. (reported fictional commitment)
Escalating without a checkpoint or requested action
Poorly specified escalation—it gives no verifiable problem or requested remedy.
iza ma wiṣel et-taʾkīd el-yōm, badde iḥke maʿ el-moshref ʿan eṭ-ṭalab el-maftūḥ.
If the confirmation doesn't arrive today, I want to speak with the supervisor about the open request.
Key Takeaways
An effective complaint connects a prior commitment to an observed outcome and attributes each piece of evidence. Beirut clitic doubling can reactivate a salient human referent, while إنو reports commitments without falsely claiming exact quotation. Increase firmness through a concrete remedy, checkpoint, written confirmation, and traceable escalation. A good resolution is not merely polite; it is specific enough to verify.
