Public Speaking and Prepared Remarks

Prepared public speech in Lebanon may be colloquial Lebanese, mixed Lebanese–MSA, or full MSA. The audience and event determine the choice: a neighborhood initiative, a company presentation, a television statement, and a state ceremony create different expectations. Preparation does not automatically require MSA.

English speakers often concentrate on elevated vocabulary and neglect audience address, repetition, and breath-group structure. A successful Lebanese speech tells listeners who is being addressed, where the argument is going, and what should happen next. Register supports that design; it does not replace it.

Open by locating the relationship

An opening can sound close, respectful, institutional, or ceremonial. مساء الخير كلكن directly includes a local audience. أهلي وأصحابي invokes intimacy and solidarity. Full MSA أيها الحضور الكريم belongs to a distinctly formal prepared frame.

مسا الخير كلكن، وشكرا لأنكن جيتوا اليوم.

masa l-khēr killkon, w-shokran laʾannkon zhītu l-yōm.

Good evening, everyone, and thank you for coming today. (public, careful Lebanese)

أهلي وأصحابي، وجودكن هون بيعنيلي كتير.

ahle w-aṣḥābe, wozhūdkon hōn byaʿnīle ktīr.

My family and friends, your being here means a lot to me. (public, intimate Lebanese)

أيها الحضور الكريم، أشكركم على مشاركتكم.

ayyuhā l-ḥuḍūr l-karīm, ashkurukum ʿalā mushārakatikum.

Distinguished guests, I thank you for your participation. (formal, MSA; ceremonial opening)

The third line switches its whole grammar and pronunciation. It should not be followed accidentally by a Lebanese clause carrying random MSA endings. The when to use MSA page maps the broader institutional contexts.

💡
Choose the first address line only after naming the audience to yourself. A neighborhood room and a ministerial ceremony do not need the same voice.

Frame the purpose early

Listeners should know why the speaker has taken the floor. Lebanese frames such as اليوم جايين نحكي عن..., الهدف من هاللقاء..., and رسالتي الأساسية... make purpose explicit without becoming stiff.

اليوم جايين نحكي عن مشكلة بتخص كل الحي.

el-yōm zhēyīn niḥke ʿan mishkle btkhoṣṣ kill el-ḥayy.

Today we're here to discuss a problem that concerns the whole neighborhood. (public, prepared Lebanese)

الهدف من هاللقا إنو نطلع بخطة واضحة.

el-hadaf mn hal-liʾa inno niṭlaʿ b-khiṭṭa wāḍḥa.

The goal of this meeting is to leave with a clear plan. (public, professional Lebanese)

رسالتي الأساسية بسيطة، التغيير بدو تعاون.

risēlte l-asēsiyye basīṭa, et-taghyīr baddo taʿāwon.

My main message is simple: change requires cooperation. (public, mixed lexical style with Lebanese grammar)

The last example uses abstract shared vocabulary, but بدو keeps the clause Lebanese. That is a controlled mixed style, not broken MSA.

Parallelism makes speech memorable

Parallel structures allow listeners to predict the next unit. Keep the grammar genuinely parallel: three b-imperfect verbs, three noun phrases, or three matched imperatives. Merely listing three ideas is not enough if their forms pull in different directions.

بدنا نسمع لبعض، نخطط سوا، ونشتغل بإيد وحدة.

badna nismaʿ la-baʿḍ, nkhaṭṭiṭ sawa, w-nishtighil b-īd waḥde.

We need to listen to one another, plan together, and work as one. (public, prepared Lebanese)

بدنا حي أنضف، شارع أأمن، وخدمة أحسن.

badna ḥayy anḍaf, shēriʿ aʾman, w-khidme aḥsan.

We want a cleaner neighborhood, a safer street, and better service. (public, prepared Lebanese)

ما رح نسكت، ما رح نتراجع، وما رح نترك حدا لحاله.

ma raḥ niskot, ma raḥ nitrāzhaʿ, w-ma raḥ nitrok ḥada la-ḥālo.

We won't be silent, we won't back down, and we won't leave anyone alone. (public, emphatic Lebanese)

Repetition licenses stronger delivery, but it does not require shouting. Put one prominence in each parallel unit and let the final unit carry the strongest landing.

💡
Write parallel lines vertically in your notes. If the repeated grammatical frame is not visible on the page, listeners are unlikely to hear it clearly.

Prepared colloquial is written for the mouth

A colloquial script should preserve forms a speaker can deliver naturally: رح, عم, هيدا, هيدي, هاد, هاي, clitics, and normal contractions. Writing it first as MSA and replacing a few nouns often leaves unnatural word order and cadence.

هيدا المشروع بلش من سؤال زغير، شو فينا نغير هون؟

hēda l-mashrūʿ ballash mn soʾāl zghīr, shū fīna nghayyir hōn?

This project began with a small question: what can we change here? (public, prepared Lebanese)

هاي مش نهاية الشغل، هاي أول خطوة.

hāy mish nihēyet esh-shoghl, hāy awwal khoṭwe.

This isn't the end of the work; this is the first step. (public, prepared Lebanese)

هيدا/هيدي are common Lebanese forms, while short هاد/هاي are also useful and are the course's beginner baseline. A speaker should choose forms that fit their actual Lebanese voice. Syrian, Palestinian, Jordanian, and Lebanese subregional public styles must be labeled rather than blended for generic grandeur.

badna waʾfitkon maʿna.

We need you to stand with us. (informal, community appeal)

اليوم عم نطلب دعمكن لهالمبادرة.

el-yōm ʿam niṭlob daʿmkon la-hal-mubādara.

Today we're asking for your support for this initiative. (public, careful Lebanese)

دعمكن أساسي لنجاح هالمشروع.

Your support is essential to the success of this project. (public, mixed Lebanese–formal lexicon)

ندعوكم إلى دعم هذا المشروع.

nadʿūkum ilā daʿm hādhā l-mashrūʿ.

We invite you to support this project. (formal, MSA; official appeal)

Close with an action and a landing

A closing normally recaps the claim, gives the audience a next step, and marks completion. بالنهاية introduces the landing; منطلب منكن supplies an action; شكرا لإلكن closes the relationship.

بالنهاية، منطلب منكن تسجلوا أسماءكن قبل ما تفلوا.

bin-nihēye, mniṭlob minkon tsazhzhlo asmāʾkon ʾabl ma tfillo.

Finally, we're asking you to register your names before you leave. (public, careful Lebanese)

شكرا لإلكن، ومنكمل هالشغل سوا.

shokran la-ilkon, w-mnkammil hal-shoghl sawa.

Thank you, and we'll continue this work together. (public, warm Lebanese closing)

💡
End on the sentence you want quoted or acted upon. Do not bury the call to action in a final string of thanks and new information.

Common Mistakes

Assuming every prepared speech must open in MSA

❌ أيها الحضور الكريم

Mismatched for a small neighborhood meeting when the rest of the speech is intimate Lebanese.

✅ مسا الخير يا أهل الحي.

masa l-khēr ya ahl el-ḥayy.

Good evening, neighbors. (public, community Lebanese)

Calling a colloquial script mere slang

❌ اليوم جايين نحكي عن مشكلة بتخصنا كلنا

Incorrect analysis — this is clear prepared Lebanese with an explicit purpose frame.

✅ اليوم جايين نحكي عن مشكلة بتخص كل واحد فينا.

el-yōm zhēyīn niḥke ʿan mishkle btkhoṣṣ kill wāḥad fīna.

Today we're here to discuss a problem that concerns every one of us. (public, prepared Lebanese)

Adding MSA endings to a Lebanese appeal

❌ بدنا دعمكن لهالمبادرة

badnā daʿmakum li-hādhihi l-mubādarati

Incorrect — Lebanese بدنا and هالـ do not take formal agreement and case endings.

✅ بدنا دعمكن لهالمبادرة.

badna daʿmkon la-hal-mubādara.

We need your support for this initiative. (public, Lebanese)

Breaking the parallel structure

❌ بدنا نسمع، التخطيط سوا، ونشتغل.

Incorrect rhetoric — a verb, a noun phrase, and another verb obscure the intended three-part pattern.

✅ بدنا نسمع، نخطط، ونشتغل سوا.

badna nismaʿ, nkhaṭṭiṭ, w-nishtighil sawa.

We need to listen, plan, and work together. (public, prepared Lebanese)

Ending without a next step

❌ هيدا كل شي، شكرا.

Weak closing — it marks an end but gives the audience no action or memorable landing.

✅ قبل ما تفلوا، سجلوا أسماءكن عالباب، وشكرا لإلكن.

ʾabl ma tfillo, sazhzhlo asmāʾkon ʿal-bāb, w-shokran la-ilkon.

Before you leave, register your names at the door, and thank you. (public, practical Lebanese closing)

Key Takeaways

Prepared remarks succeed through audience address, an early purpose statement, audible parallelism, and a decisive closing. Colloquial Lebanese can be fully public and polished; mixed vocabulary can broaden reach; MSA is appropriate when the institution and audience genuinely call for it. Keep each chosen frame internally coherent.
