Lebanese معmaʿ links people or things that are together: “with.” With a pronoun suffix, it also says that an object or useful resource is presently with someone: معي المفتاح “I have the key with me.” That immediate-company meaning is narrower than general possession with عند.
All core forms here are everyday urban Lebanese (informal). English uses with for company, instruments, manner, and possession, but Lebanese divides those meanings among different prepositions. The physical idea “together with” predicts the uses of مع better than a one-word translation does.
Accompaniment: people moving or staying together
Put مع before the companion. The phrase can follow a motion verb, describe who is present, or identify who joins an activity.
رحت مع رامي عالمحل بعد الشغل.
riḥt maʿ Rāme ʿal-maḥall baʿd esh-shoghol.
I went with Rami to the shop after work. (informal; accompaniment)
أختي معي بالسيارة، وفي محل إلك معنا.
okhte maʿe bis-sayyāra, w-fī maḥall ilak maʿna.
My sister is with me in the car, and there's room for you with us. (informal)
مين جايي معكن عالعشا؟
mīn zhēye maʿkon ʿal-ʿasha?
Who's coming with you all to dinner? (informal)
The companion is not an object possessed by the subject. أختي معي says that my sister and I are together now; it does not express ownership. English I have my sister with me packages this as have, while Lebanese directly states the spatial relation.
The suffixed forms
With pronouns, مع takes a suffixed stem. The common forms are معيmaʿe, معكmaʿak to a man and maʿik to a woman, معهmaʿo, معهاmaʿa, معناmaʿna, معكنmaʿkon, and معنmaʿon. Spelling does not show the two pronunciations of معك.
معك بطاقة البنك؟
maʿak bṭāʾet el-bank?
Do you have the bank card with you? (informal; to one man)
معها هويتها وكل الأوراق.
maʿa huwiyyeta w-kill el-awrāʾ.
She has her ID and all the papers with her. (informal; carried items)
المفتاح معن، مش معنا.
el-miftēḥ maʿon, mish maʿna.
They have the key with them, not us. (informal; contrasting current holders)
These forms belong to the larger suffix system described in Prepositions with Pronoun Suffixes. Learn the whole spoken form rather than attaching an English pronoun mechanically.
Having something on hand
With an object, مع + suffix locates it in somebody’s immediate company. It may be in a pocket, bag, car, or simply available for the present situation.
معي مصاري، بس ما معي فراطة.
maʿe maṣāre, bass ma maʿe frāṭa.
I have money with me, but I don't have change. (informal; immediate availability)
معك قلم؟ بدي اكتب العنوان.
maʿak ʾalam? badde oktob el-ʿonwēn.
Do you have a pen? I need to write down the address. (informal; to one man)
ما معنا مي كفاية للطريق.
ma maʿna mayy kfēye laṭ-ṭarīʾ.
We don't have enough water with us for the road. (informal)
This is why معي can translate English I have, but only under the right construal. General ownership uses عند: عندي سيارة، بس اليوم مش معي “I own/have a car, but I don't have it with me today.” See Possession with عند and Immediate Possession with مع.
Usable resources beyond physical objects
Time, information, and an idea can be treated as resources available to the speaker now. This extension is common but lexical: it does not make مع a universal translation of have.
معك وقت نحكي خمس دقايق؟
maʿak waʾet niḥke khames daʾāyeʾ?
Do you have time to talk for five minutes? (informal; available time)
معنا كل المعلومات لنقرر.
maʿna kill el-maʿlūmāt linʾarrer.
We have all the information needed to decide. (informal; available information)
معي فكرة أحسن لهالمشكلة.
maʿe fikra aḥsan la-hal-moshkle.
I have a better idea for this problem. (informal; idea ready to offer)
By contrast, age, kinship, illness, and scheduled events use their own Lebanese constructions. There is no reason to force مع into every English sentence containing have.
Interaction and reciprocal contexts
Many verbs conceptualize another participant as someone you interact with: حكي مع “talk with,” اتفق مع “agree with,” and اختلف مع “disagree with.” The preposition belongs to the Lebanese verb frame and must be learned with it.
حكيت مع المدير عن الموعد.
ḥkēt maʿ el-mdīr ʿan el-mawʿed.
I spoke with the manager about the appointment. (informal interaction frame)
اتفقنا مع الجيران نصلح المدخل سوا.
ittafaʾna maʿ el-zhīrān nṣalleḥ el-madkhal sawa.
We agreed with the neighbors to repair the entrance together. (informal reciprocal context)
ما تختلف معي قبل ما تسمع الفكرة.
ma tikhtalef maʿe ʾabel ma tismaʿ el-fikra.
Don't disagree with me before you hear the idea. (informal; interpersonal stance)
The participant after مع need not perform exactly the same action, but the relation is interactive. This differs from an instrument.
مع is not instrumental “with”
English says “open it with a key” and “write with a pen.” Lebanese normally uses attached بـ for an instrument, not مع.
فتحت الباب بالمفتاح.
fataḥt el-bēb bil-miftēḥ.
I opened the door with the key. (instrumental بـ)
رحت عالباب مع صاحب المفتاح.
riḥt ʿal-bēb maʿ ṣāḥeb el-miftēḥ.
I went to the door with the person who has the key. (accompaniment مع)
The minimal pair shows why translating the nearest English word fails: the first “with” identifies a tool, while the second identifies a companion.
Questions keep the preposition
Use مع مين؟ “with whom?” either at the front or in its semantic position. A bare final مع is English-style preposition stranding and is not the simple Lebanese pattern.
مع مين رايح عالموعد؟
maʿ mīn rāyeḥ ʿal-mawʿed?
Who are you going to the appointment with? (informal; fronted phrase)
رايح عالموعد مع مين؟
rāyeḥ ʿal-mawʿed maʿ mīn?
You're going to the appointment with whom? (informal; in situ, often checking)
Dialogue: arranging a ride
معك حدا بالسيارة، ولا في محل إلي؟
maʿak ḥada bis-sayyāra, walla fī maḥall ile?
Nour: Do you have anyone with you in the car, or is there room for me? (informal)
أخي معي، بس في محل ورا.
akhe maʿe, bass fī maḥall wara.
Rami: My brother is with me, but there's space in the back.
منيح. معكن مي للطريق؟
mnīḥ. maʿkon mayy laṭ-ṭarīʾ?
Nour: Good. Do you have water with you for the road?
إي، معنا قنينتين.
ē, maʿna ʾinnīntēn.
Rami: Yes, we have two bottles with us.
Common Mistakes
Using مع for an instrument
❌ فتحت العلبة مع السكينة.
Incorrect for the intended instrument reading — مع makes the knife sound like a companion.
✅ فتحت العلبة بالسكينة.
fataḥt el-ʿelbe bis-sikkīne.
I opened the container with the knife. (instrumental بـ)
Using immediate مع for general ownership
❌ معي بيت ببيروت، بس ساكن برا البلد.
Wrong for ordinary general possession — the house is not something presently carried or accompanying the speaker.
✅ عندي بيت ببيروت، بس ساكن برا البلد.
ʿinde bēt b-Bayrūt, bass sāken barra l-balad.
I have a house in Beirut, but I live outside the country.
Stranding مع
❌ مين رحت عالسوق مع؟
Incorrect English-style stranding — مع must have its complement.
✅ مع مين رحت عالسوق؟
maʿ mīn riḥt ʿas-sūʾ?
Who did you go to the market with?
Adding a separate pronoun after a suffixed form
❌ المفتاح مع إنت، مش معي.
Incorrect — a pronoun complement is expressed by the suffixed form معك, not bare مع plus إنت.
✅ المفتاح معك إنت، مش معي.
el-miftēḥ maʿak inte, mish maʿe.
You have the key, not me. (contrastive independent pronoun)
Key Takeaways
Use مع for accompaniment and interaction, and مع + suffix for a person or resource presently with someone. Contrast immediate معي with broader عندي. Use بـ, not مع, for an instrument. In questions, keep مع مين together unless a genuine resumptive cleft supplies a suffixed preposition.
