بلا and بدون: Without

Lebanese uses بلا bla and بدون bidūn for “without.” Both can take nouns, but they differ in feel and distribution. بلا is compact and extremely conversational; بدون is common before heavier complements. Their action complements connect to the masdar system.

Noun complements

بدي قهوة بلا سكر وكاسة مي.

badde ʾahwe bla sokkar w-kēset mayy.

I'd like coffee without sugar and a glass of water. (compact service request)

ما فينا نبلش الاجتماع بدون المدير.

ma fīna nballesh el-izhtimēʿ bidūn el-mdīr.

We can't start the meeting without the manager. (absent participant)

طلعت من البيت بلا جاكيت ورجعت بردان.

ṭliʿet min el-bēt bla zhākēt w-rizhiʿet bardēn.

I left home without a jacket and came back cold. (missing accompaniment)

💡
Use بلا naturally in short everyday combinations; use بدون freely when the complement is longer or needs explicit contrast. The boundary is a usage tendency, not a rigid semantic rule.

Actions as complements

An action can be packaged as a verbal noun or as a clause-like expression. Everyday Lebanese often favors من دون ما + finite clause when the subject or tense must be explicit.

غيروا الموعد بدون إشعار مسبق.

ghayyaro l-mawʿed bidūn ishʿār mosbaʾ.

They changed the appointment without prior notice. (verbal-noun complement; professional)

فل من دون ما يقول لحدا.

fall min dūn ma yʾūl la-ḥada.

He left without telling anyone. (clause with its own subject agreement)

خلصنا الشغل بلا ما نضطر نضل لليل.

khallaṣna sh-shoghol bla ma niḍṭarr nḍall lal-lēl.

We finished the work without having to stay into the night. (informal clausal complement)

Formal written Arabic strongly favors بدون or من دون with formal clause structure (formal). The examples here keep Lebanese verbs and pronunciation.

Manner and evaluative بلا

Many بلا + noun phrases describe manner: بلا سبب “for no reason,” بلا نتيجة “with no result,” بلا انتباه “carelessly.” Some are evaluative and should be learned as chunks.

عم بيعيد نفس السؤال بلا سبب واضح.

ʿam byiʿīd nafs es-suʾāl bla sabab wāḍeḥ.

He keeps repeating the same question for no clear reason. (manner/cause absent)

حكى بلا تفكير وندم بعدين.

ḥaka bla tafkīr w-nidem baʿdēn.

He spoke without thinking and regretted it later. (manner)

Scope: what is absent?

Position identifies what بلا/بدون modifies. A phrase beside a noun describes that noun; a later phrase may describe how the whole event occurred.

طلبت سندويشة بلا بصل.

ṭalabet sandwīshe bla baṣal.

I ordered a sandwich without onions. (noun-internal scope)

طلبت السندويشة بلا ما اسأل عن السعر.

ṭalabet es-sandwīshe bla ma isʾal ʿan es-seʿer.

I ordered the sandwich without asking about the price. (event scope)

This is why “without” cannot be inserted anywhere English permits it. Place the phrase beside the constituent whose absence matters.

Suffixed forms and alternatives

Both prepositions can carry person reference. Conversational بلا has forms such as بلاك، بلاكي; بدون gives the transparent productive series بدوني، بدونك، بدونه، بدونها، بدوننا، بدونكن، بدونهن.

بلشوا العشا بدوني مع إني قلتلكن انطروني.

ballasho l-ʿasha bidūne maʿ inne ʾeltilkon inṭorūne.

They started dinner without me even though I told you to wait for me. (first-person suffix)

بلشنا بلاك لأنك تأخرت.

ballashna blāk laʾannak tʾakhkharet.

We started without you because you were late. (informal masculine suffix on بلا)

ما رح ناخد القرار بدونكن.

ma raḥ nākhod el-ʾarār bidūnkon.

We won't make the decision without you all. (plural suffix)

💡
Keep suffixed بدونـ as one written word. Do not strand “without” after a pronoun question; ask بدون مين؟ or name the suffixed form.

Prohibitive-like بلا

Short expressions such as بلا مزح “no joking / seriously” and بلا هالحكي “enough of that talk” can function interactionally like warnings or dismissals (informal). بلا ما + second-person bare imperfect can also issue an informal negative directive, often with the flavor “don't go/start doing X.” The neutral grammatical prohibition remains ما + bare second person.

بلا مزح، لازم نفل قبل ما تسكر الطريق.

bla mazḥ, lāzem nfill ʾabel ma tsakker eṭ-ṭarīʾ.

Seriously—no joking—we need to leave before the road closes. (interactional formula)

Service dialogue

فيكن تعملوا السلطة بلا جبنة؟

fīkon tiʿmalo s-salaṭa bla zhibne?

Customer: Can you make the salad without cheese?

أكيد، وبدون خبز كمان إذا بدك.

akīd, w-bidūn khobez kamēn iza baddak.

Server: Of course, and without bread too if you want.

الخبز عادي، بس بلا صوص زيادة.

el-khobez ʿāde, bass bla ṣōṣ zyēde.

Customer: Bread is fine, just no extra sauce.

تمام، منكتبها عالملاحظة كرمال ما نغلط.

tamēm, mniktoba ʿal-mlāḥaẓa kirmēl ma nighlaṭ.

Server: Great, we'll write it in the note so we don't make a mistake.

Common Mistakes

❌ فل ما يقول لحدا بدون.

Incorrect English-style stranding — بدون precedes its complement.

✅ فل من دون ما يقول لحدا وين رايح.

fall min dūn ma yʾūl la-ḥada wēn rāyeḥ.

He left without telling anyone where he was going.

❌ عملنا الاجتماع بدون هن.

Incorrect — the plural pronoun attaches to بدون.

✅ عملنا الاجتماع بدونهن لأنهن تأخروا.

ʿmilna l-izhtimēʿ bidūnhon laʾannon tʾakhkharo.

We held the meeting without them because they were late.

❌ بلا ما بتحكي هلق.

Incorrect — after بلا ما, use the bare imperfect rather than the ordinary b-form.

✅ بلا ما تحكي هلق؛ خلينا نسمع الجواب.

bla ma tiḥke hallaʾ; khallīna nismaʿ el-zhawēb.

Don't start talking now; let's hear the answer. (informal بلا ما directive; neutral ما تحكي is also possible)

Key Takeaways

Use compact بلا and productive بدون for absent nouns; use a verbal noun or من دون ما / بلا ما + clause for absent actions. Position determines scope. Attach pronoun suffixes directly, and distinguish interactional بلا مزح and directive بلا ما تحكي from the neutral prohibition ما تحكي.
