Negative Commands with ما

An urban Lebanese negative command uses ما + a second-person bare imperfect: ما تكتب “don't write,” ما تكتبي to one woman, and ما تكتبوا to a group. It is not formed by adding ما to the positive imperative. The second-person تـ returns because the negative construction is built from an agreeing imperfect form.

English uses one unchanged don't + verb for every addressee. Lebanese marks gender and number, preserves weak and geminate verb behavior, and keeps object clitics attached to the bare verb. Tone and framing then determine whether the prohibition sounds like advice, a practical instruction, or a sharp warning.

Positive command versus negative command

Start with the second-person bare imperfect, not the positive command and not the ordinary b-imperfect. The contrast is easiest to see across all three addressee forms.

AddresseePositive “write”Negative “don't write”Reading
one manاكتبما تكتبma tiktob
one womanاكتبيما تكتبيma tiktbe
a groupاكتبواما تكتبواma tiktbo

اكتب الملاحظة عجنب.

ktob el-mulāḥaẓa ʿa-zhanab.

Write the note on the side. (neutral instruction to one man)

ما تكتب شي عالنسخة الأصلية.

ma tiktob shi ʿan-noskha l-aṣliyye.

Don't write anything on the original copy. (neutral prohibition to one man)

اكتبي اسمك فوق.

ktbe ismik fōʾ.

Write your name at the top. (instruction to one woman)

ما تكتبي رقمك عالورقة.

ma tiktbe raʾmik ʿal-waraʾa.

Don't write your number on the paper. (prohibition to one woman)

افتحوا الشبابيك شوي.

iftaḥo sh-shabēbīk shwayy.

Open the windows a little. (instruction to a group)

ما تفتحوا الباب الخارجي.

ma tiftaḥo l-bēb el-khārzhe.

Don't open the outside door. (prohibition to a group)

💡
The positive command drops the second-person prefix: اكتب. The prohibition restores it: ما تكتب. Adding ما directly to اكتب leaves you with the wrong stem.

Gender and number stay visible

The masculine singular often has no ending; feminine -ي and plural -وا remain on the bare imperfect. Agreement belongs to the addressee, not to the object.

MeaningMasculineFemininePlural
don't goما تروحما تروحيما تروحوا
don't forgetما تنسىما تنسيما تنسوا
don't putما تحطما تحطيما تحطوا

ما تروحي لحالك بهالوقت.

ma trūḥe la-ḥālik b-hal-waʾet.

Don't go alone at this time. (concerned advice to one woman)

ما تنسوا تطفوا الضو قبل ما تفلوا.

ma tinso tṭaffo ḍ-ḍaww ʾabel ma tfillo.

Don't forget to turn off the light before you leave. (reminder to a group)

Weak verbs do not become regular inside a prohibition. ما تروح، ما تجي، ما تنسى retain their verified bare-imperfect stems. Geminates retain their doubled consonant: ما تحطma tḥoṭṭ.

Object and recipient clitics remain attached

A direct-object suffix stays on the verb, and a recipient suffix stays on its normal host. ما remains a separate particle before the complete verbal unit.

ما تبعته هلق؛ بعده ناقص.

ma tibʿato hallaʾ; baʿdo nāʾeṣ.

Don't send it now; it's still incomplete. (prohibition to one man; masculine object)

ما تبعتيها قبل ما نراجعها سوا.

ma tibʿatīha ʾabel ma nrēzhiʿa sawa.

Don't send it before we review it together. (prohibition to one woman; feminine object)

ما تخبرني الجواب؛ بدي جرب لحالي.

ma tkhabbirne l-zhawēb; badde zharreb la-ḥāle.

Don't tell me the answer; I want to try by myself. (informal; first-person recipient)

The prohibition does not detach a suffix and does not move it to ما. Review the attachment patterns in Imperatives with Clitics.

Three different scopes around the same action

Compare the position of ما with ability فيك. These are not stylistic variants:

ما تفتح الشباك.

ma tiftaḥ esh-shobbēk.

Don't open the window. (direct prohibition)

ما فيك تفتح الشباك لأنو عالق.

ma fīk tiftaḥ esh-shobbēk laʾanno ʿāleʾ.

You can't open the window because it's stuck. (inability, not a command)

فيك ما تفتح الشباك؟ الهوا قوي.

fīk ma tiftaḥ esh-shobbēk? el-hawa ʾawe.

Could you not open the window? The wind is strong. (softened negative request)

The first directs non-action. The second reports lack of ability. The third asks whether non-action is possible. English uses not in all three; Lebanese placement reveals what is being negated.

💡
Before translating “don't/can't/could you not,” decide the speech act. Use ما تفتح for a prohibition, ما فيك تفتح for inability, and فيك ما تفتح؟ for a negotiable negative request.

Softening a prohibition

A direct prohibition can be completely appropriate for safety, instructions, and close relationships. When refusal should remain socially available, a question frame or conditional softener reduces directness.

إذا فيك، ما تبعت الرسالة قبل ما نتأكد.

iza fīk, ma tibʿat er-risēle ʾabel ma nitʾakkad.

If you can, don't send the message before we make sure. (polite workplace request to one man)

ممكن ما تحطوا موسيقى بهالغرفة؟

momken ma tḥoṭṭo mūsīʾa b-hal-ghorfe?

Could you all not play music in this room? (polite plural request)

دير بالك ما... frames the negative action as something to avoid: دير بالك ما توقع “be careful not to fall.” أوعى ت... is a stronger warning, often “don't you dare / watch out not to” (informal; force and agreement vary by speaker). Neither is a neutral substitute to insert before every negative command.

ديري بالك ما تنسي المفتاح جوات الباب.

dīre bēlik ma tinse l-miftēḥ zhowwēt el-bēb.

Be careful not to leave the key inside the door. (concerned warning to one woman)

أوعى تقرب عالحافة؛ الأرض مزحلقة.

ūʿa tʾarreb ʿal-ḥāffe; el-arḍ mzaḥlaʾa.

Don't go near the edge; the ground is slippery. (informal strong safety warning)

Regional and register boundaries

This guide's urban Beirut baseline uses ما + bare imperfect without a final negative suffix. ما تفتحش and suffix-only variants belong to Palestinian and Jordanian systems (regional: Palestinian/Jordanian) and occur variably in parts of southern Lebanon (regional: South Lebanon). لا appears in formal Arabic prohibitions and in some regional or fixed spoken uses, but copying MSA mood endings into a Lebanese command is not a politeness strategy.

Dialogue: stopping a premature post

ما تبعتي الصور عالغروب هلق؛ بعدنا ما اخترناهن.

ma tibʿate ṣ-ṣowar ʿal-ghrūb hallaʾ; baʿdna ma ikhtarnāhon.

Maya: Don't send the photos to the group now; we haven't chosen them yet. (informal prohibition to one woman)

طيب، فيني ابعت صورة المنظر بس؟

ṭayyeb, fīne ibʿat ṣūrit el-manẓar bass?

Lina: Okay, can I send just the scenery photo? (informal permission request)

لأ، ما تبعتي شي قبل ما نسأل الكل.

laʾ, ma tibʿate shi ʾabel ma nisʾal el-kill.

Maya: No, don't send anything before we ask everyone. (informal refusal and correction)

ماشي، بخليهن عندي لهلق.

mēshe, bkhallīhon ʿinde la-hallaʾ.

Lina: All right, I'll keep them to myself for now. (informal acceptance)

Common Mistakes

Negating the positive imperative

❌ ما اكتب اسمك هون.

Incorrect — the negative command needs the second-person t-prefix.

✅ ما تكتب اسمك بهالخانة.

ma tiktob ismak b-hal-khāne.

Don't write your name in this box.

Keeping the ordinary b-prefix

❌ ما بتفتح الباب.

Not a direct prohibition in the intended context — with b- this is read as a statement or question.

✅ ما تفتح الباب لحد ما دقلك.

ma tiftaḥ el-bēb la-ḥadd ma doʾʾlak.

Don't open the door until I call you.

Losing feminine agreement

❌ يا لينا، ما تروح لحالك.

Incorrect agreement for a woman in this baseline — use the feminine bare form تروحي.

✅ يا لينا، ما تروحي لحالك.

ya Līna, ma trūḥe la-ḥālik.

Lina, don't go by yourself.

Using مش before the finite command form

❌ مش تحكي بهالموضوع هلق.

Incorrect for a neutral prohibition — مش negates constituents and nonverbal predicates, not this finite directive.

✅ ما تحكي بهالموضوع قدام الولاد.

ma tiḥke b-hal-mawḍūʿ ʾoddēm el-wlād.

Don't talk about this subject in front of the children.

Importing final -ش

❌ ما تنساش البطاقة.

Incorrect in the target system — this prohibition does not take a final -ش.

✅ ما تنسى البطاقة بالبيت.

ma tinsa l-biṭāʾa bil-bēt.

Don't forget the card at home. (Beirut baseline)

Key Takeaways

Build a prohibition from ما + second-person bare imperfect. Keep feminine and plural agreement, verified weak or geminate stems, and attached clitics. Distinguish a direct ما تفتح from inability ما فيك تفتح and the softened request فيك ما تفتح؟. Use conditional and question frames when social negotiation matters, and keep final -ش forms explicitly regional rather than mixing them into the Beirut system.
