Lebanese بينbēn relates two or more landmarks: “between” two items, “among” a group, or “within” a set of people. حدḥadd places one thing directly beside another. The core contrast is an interval or network versus adjacency.
English often contrasts between and among according to whether alternatives are treated individually or as a group, not by number alone. Lebanese normally uses بين across both readings. Conversely, English by can mean beside, by means of, or before a deadline; only the spatial “beside” meaning belongs to حد.
بين with two landmarks
With two named landmarks, connect them with و. بين presents the target as occupying the interval or participating in a relation that spans the pair.
المكتبة بين البنك والصيدلية.
el-maktabe bēn el-bank wiṣ-ṣaydaliyye.
The bookstore is between the bank and the pharmacy. (neutral spatial relation)
حط الطاولة بين الكنبايتين.
ḥoṭṭ eṭ-ṭāwle bēn el-kanabēytēn.
Put the table between the two sofas. (informal command)
في ممر زغير بين البنايتين.
fī mamarr zghīr bēn el-binēytēn.
There's a small passage between the two buildings. (neutral)
The dual form on the landmark is possible and natural in familiar words such as البنايتين. It is not required by بين itself: بين البنك والصيدلية names the two landmarks separately.
بين with a plural: “among” and “within”
Before a plural or collective noun, the same بين locates something inside a distributed set or describes relations among its members.
لقيت المفتاح بين الأوراق القديمة.
lʾēt el-miftēḥ bēn el-awrāʾ el-ʾdīme.
I found the key among the old papers. (informal; physical set)
كان في كرسي فاضي بين العالم.
kēn fī korse fāḍe bēn el-ʿālam.
There was an empty chair among the people. (informal; collective landmark)
وزعوا الشغل بين أعضاء الفريق.
wazzaʿo sh-shoghol bēn aʿḍāʾ el-farīʾ.
They divided the work among the team members. (professional spoken; distribution)
There is no ordinary Lebanese rule that reserves بين for exactly two. The number and meaning of the complement determine whether English chooses “between” or “among.”
Comparison and choice
An abstract difference, similarity, or choice also spans alternatives. This makes بين central in comparison frames such as الفرق بين “the difference between” and اختار بين “choose between/among.”
شو الفرق بين هالخطة والخطة القديمة؟
shū l-fareʾ bēn hal-khiṭṭa wil-khiṭṭa l-ʾdīme?
What's the difference between this plan and the old plan? (neutral comparison)
بعدني عم بختار بين عرضين للشغل.
baʿdne ʿam bakhtār bēn ʿarḍēn lash-shoghol.
I'm still choosing between two job offers. (informal deliberation)
ما في مقارنة بين السعرين.
ma fī moʾārane bēn es-siʿrēn.
There's no comparison between the two prices. (informal evaluative statement)
English sometimes uses from after different. Lebanese comparison frames must be learned lexically; do not replace بين in الفرق بين with the nearest English preposition.
Social relations and reciprocal space
Because بين spans members of a set, it naturally describes agreements, tension, secrets, and communication within a social group.
صار سوء تفاهم بين الجيران.
ṣār sūʾ tafāhom bēn el-zhīrān.
There was a misunderstanding among the neighbors. (neutral social relation)
خلينا نحل المشكلة بين بعضنا.
khallīna nḥill el-moshkle bēn baʿḍna.
Let's solve the problem among ourselves. (informal; reciprocal group)
هالحكي بيني وبينك، ما تخبر حدا.
hal-ḥake bēne w-bēnak, ma tkhabbir ḥada.
This stays between you and me; don't tell anyone. (informal confidential frame)
The repeated structure بيني وبينك explicitly names both endpoints. بيناتناbēnētna is also common for “between/among us,” especially when the internal group relation is prominent. These suffixed forms belong to the wider system in Prepositions with Pronoun Suffixes.
ما في أسرار بيناتنا.
ma fī asrār bēnētna.
There are no secrets between us. (informal reciprocal relation)
حد for direct adjacency
حد means directly beside or next to. It does not require a second landmark because the target itself supplies one side of the adjacency relation.
الصيدلية حد المستشفى دغري.
eṣ-ṣaydaliyye ḥadd el-mostashfa doghre.
The pharmacy is directly beside the hospital. (neutral location)
اقعد حدي لنشوف الخريطة سوا.
oʾʿod ḥadde linshūf el-kharīṭa sawa.
Sit beside me so we can look at the map together. (informal; suffixed form)
تركت تلفوني حد فنجان القهوة.
taraket tilifōne ḥadd finzhēn el-ʾahwe.
I left my phone beside the cup of coffee. (informal; close adjacency)
Compare the two relations directly. For the separate front–back axis, see قدام and ورا.
المطعم بين الفندق والبنك، والمخبز حد البنك.
el-maṭʿam bēn el-fondoʾ wil-bank, wil-makhbaz ḥadd el-bank.
The restaurant is between the hotel and the bank, and the bakery is beside the bank. (interval versus adjacency)
Suffixes with حد and بين
حد takes the forms حدي، حدك، حده، حدها، حدنا، حدكن، حدن in the course baseline. بين can take suffixes in forms such as بيني، بينك، بينه, while reciprocal plural meanings often use the expanded بيناتنا، بيناتكن، بيناتن.
في كرسي فاضي حدك؟
fī korse fāḍe ḥaddak?
Is there an empty chair beside you? (informal; to one man)
السيارة حدن، بس ما انتبهوا إلها.
es-sayyāra ḥaddon, bass ma intabaho ila.
The car is beside them, but they didn't notice it. (informal)
الاتفاق بينه وبين شريكه واضح.
el-ittifāʾ bēno w-bēn sharīko wāḍeḥ.
The agreement between him and his partner is clear. (neutral reciprocal relation)
The suffix replaces a full pronoun complement. حدي أنا is possible only when أنا adds deliberate contrast, not as the neutral way to say “beside me.”
جنب and other regional alternatives
جنبzhanb also means “beside/next to” and is widespread across the Levant, including in Lebanese repertoires (regional/cross-Levantine). This course uses حد as its first production form in urban Lebanese, while teaching جنب for recognition. The reading zhanb below follows the Beirut ج baseline; other Levantine speakers may use janb or another locally regular outcome. Palestinian and Jordanian speakers may favor جنب more consistently (regional: Palestine/Jordan); individual Lebanese and Syrian speakers vary.
المحل جنب الجامع.
el-maḥall zhanb el-zhēmiʿ.
The shop is beside the mosque. (regional/cross-Levantine alternative with جنب)
This is variation, not a difference in intelligence, education, or correctness. Keep one baseline in production and recognize the alternatives speakers actually use.
Questions keep the relation word with its complement
Ask بين شو وشو؟ “between what and what?” or حد مين؟ “beside whom?” Do not leave بين or حد bare at the end of a simple question.
الموقف بين شو وشو؟
el-mawʾef bēn shū w-shū?
What two places is the parking lot between? (informal clarification)
حد مين حجزتلي كرسي؟
ḥadd mīn ḥazhazetle korse?
Who did you reserve me a seat beside? (informal)
Dialogue: finding the right entrance
المدخل بين البنك والمخبز، صح؟
el-madkhal bēn el-bank wil-makhbaz, ṣaḥḥ?
Visitor: The entrance is between the bank and the bakery, right? (informal route check)
لا، هيدا مدخل الموظفين. المدخل الرئيسي حد الصيدلية.
la, hayda madkhal el-mwaẓẓafīn. el-madkhal er-raʾīse ḥadd eṣ-ṣaydaliyye.
Local: No, that's the employees' entrance. The main entrance is beside the pharmacy.
والصيدلية وين؟
wiṣ-ṣaydaliyye wēn?
Visitor: And where's the pharmacy?
قدامك، بين بنايتين زغار.
ʾoddēmak, bēn binēytēn zghār.
Local: Ahead of you, between two small buildings.
Common Mistakes
Reserving بين for exactly two
❌ وزعوا الهدايا مع الولاد.
Wrong for the intended distribution among the children — مع describes accompaniment, not allocation across a set.
✅ وزعوا الهدايا بين الولاد.
wazzaʿo l-hadāya bēn el-wlād.
They distributed the gifts among the children.
Using حد for an interval
❌ المكتب حد البنك والصيدلية.
Wrong for ‘between the bank and pharmacy’ — حد gives adjacency to one landmark, not an interval spanning two.
✅ المكتب بين البنك والصيدلية.
el-maktab bēn el-bank wiṣ-ṣaydaliyye.
The office is between the bank and the pharmacy.
Translating “difference from” word by word
❌ شو الفرق من هالنسخة للقديمة؟
Incorrect frame for the intended comparison — Lebanese uses الفرق بين the alternatives.
✅ شو الفرق بين هالنسخة والقديمة؟
shū l-fareʾ bēn han-noskha wil-ʾdīme?
What's the difference between this version and the old one?
Stranding حد
❌ مين قعدت حد؟
Incorrect English-style stranding — حد needs its complement or a suffix.
✅ حد مين قعدت؟
ḥadd mīn ʾaʿadet?
Who did you sit beside?
Key Takeaways
Use بين with two landmarks, a plural set, a comparison, or a social relation; it covers both English “between” and “among.” Use حد for immediate adjacency and attach its suffixes directly: حدي، حدك، حدن. Recognize جنب as a widespread cross-Levantine alternative while keeping حد as the course production baseline. In questions, retain the whole relation phrase: بين شو وشو؟، حد مين؟.
