B2 is the point at which grammar becomes an argument-management system. You must place events against one another, foreground a claim, keep references clear across long clauses, and follow speakers who move between Lebanese, mixed educated speech, and Modern Standard Arabic (MSA). The productive home base remains urban Lebanese with Beirut pronunciation (informal); formal and mixed choices are added deliberately.
The central media skill is diagnosis before imitation. A television segment may contain a Lebanese interviewer, an MSA voice-over, a guest using mixed professional Arabic, and a written ticker—all within one minute. “Arabic from Lebanon” is not automatically “Lebanese colloquial.”
Do not suspend Arabic-script reading while you study that variation, and do not turn the route into a root catalogue. Annotate media in Arabic, then retrieve each new verb through its verified Lebanese principal parts and a useful phrase before analyzing its root family.
Stage 1: Refine aspect beyond a tense timeline
Review tense sequence, past progressive, pluperfect, and future in the past. B2 control means choosing a viewpoint: an event can be presented as ongoing background, completed foreground, resulting state, repeated history, or projected future.
صارله ساعتين عم يحاول يحل المشكلة، وبعده ما لقى الحل.
ṣārlo sēʿtēn ʿam yḥēwel yḥell l-mishkle, w-baʿdo ma laʾa l-ḥall.
He’s been trying to solve the problem for two hours, and he still hasn’t found the solution.
كنت مفكر إنو الاجتماع رح يخلص بكير، بس ضلينا عم نحكي للثمانية.
kent mfakker inno l-izhtimēʿ raḥ yikhlaṣ bkīr, bass ḍallēna ʿam niḥki la-t-tmēnye.
I thought the meeting would finish early, but we kept talking until eight.
English tense labels are useful prompts but poor final analyses. صارله plus duration builds an elapsed-time frame; بعده keeps a state current; ضلّ plus عم presents continued activity. Study the construction as a package and then vary the lexical verb.
Stage 2: Build arguments with clause linkage
Move through بس, لأنو, مع إنو, and result clauses. Do more than join two statements: signal concession, cause, consequence, and limitation so that the listener can recover your line of reasoning.
مع إنو الخطة الأولى أرخص، الخطة التانية أوضح وأسهل بالتنفيذ.
maʿ inno l-khoṭṭa l-ūla arkhaṣ, l-khoṭṭa t-tēnye awḍaḥ w-ashal b-t-tanfīz.
Although the first plan is cheaper, the second plan is clearer and easier to implement.
برأيي المشكلة مش بالسعر؛ المشكلة إنو الخدمة بطيئة وما في تواصل واضح.
b-raʾye l-mishkle mish b-s-siʿer; l-mishkle inno l-khidme baṭīʾa w-ma fī twāṣol wāḍeḥ.
In my view, the problem isn’t the price; the problem is that the service is slow and communication is unclear.
The repeated phrase المشكلة is not clumsy here: it gives the correction contrastive weight. Advanced style is not a ban on repetition; it is control over when repetition organizes information.
Stage 3: Control focus, topics, and resumption
Study left dislocation, fronted objects, clefts, and resumption. Lebanese commonly places an established topic first and represents it again with a pronoun or suffix inside the clause. English often fronts an element by leaving a gap; copying that gap can make Lebanese sound incomplete.
هالموضوع، نحنا حكينا فيه قبل، بس ما أخدنا قرار.
hal-mawḍūʿ, niḥna ḥkēna fī ʾabel, bass ma akhadna ʾarār.
This issue—we discussed it before, but we didn’t make a decision.
يلي بدي قوله إنو التأخير كان ممكن نتفاداه.
yalle baddi ʾūlo inno t-taʾkhīr kēn mumkin nitfēdē.
What I want to say is that the delay could have been avoided.
Focus constructions also interact with intonation. Read the focus prosody page instead of trying to signal every contrast through word order alone.
The same consistency applies to demonstratives. Keep beginner هاد hād and هاي hāy as one production set, or deliberately adopt common Lebanese هيدا hayda and هيدي hayde (regional: Lebanon); recognize Syrian, Palestinian, and Jordanian systems without blending their most noticeable forms into one sentence.
Stage 4: Identify Lebanese, mixed, and MSA media
Work through the repertoire overview, mixed Arabic, journalistic bridge, and local news text. Classify a segment using clusters of evidence, not one prestigious word.
| Repertoire | Typical signals | Production goal |
|---|---|---|
| Lebanese colloquial (informal) | شو, وين, بدي, b-imperfect, عم, رح, urban ق as ʾ | Stable default conversation |
| Mixed professional speech (formal contact / professional spoken) | Lebanese clause grammar with formal nouns, selected MSA connectors, careful pronunciation | Use choices appropriate to audience and topic |
| MSA (formal) | MSA relative forms, agreement and verb morphology, ستـ future, q and j in formal reading | Recognize first; produce for tasks that call for it |
أعلنت الوزارة أن المدارس ستقفل غدا بسبب الطقس.
ʾaʿlanati l-wizāratu ʾanna l-madārisa satuqfalu ghadan bi-sababi ṭ-ṭaqs.
The ministry announced that schools will close tomorrow because of the weather. (formal MSA news style)
الوزارة أعلنت إنو المدارس رح تسكر بكرا بسبب الطقس.
l-wizāra aʿlanet inno l-madāres raḥ tsakker bukra b-sabab ṭ-ṭaʾs.
The ministry announced that schools will close tomorrow because of the weather. (mixed Lebanese news retelling)
The two examples communicate similar content but are not freely interchangeable. The first uses an MSA verb system and formal reading; the second places formal vocabulary inside Lebanese clause grammar. Before repeating a media sentence, identify which system carries its verbs, particles, relatives, and sound choices.
Stage 5: Code-switch as an audience choice
Read code-switching basics, French contact, and English contact. In Lebanon, French- and English-origin material can index workplace culture, schooling, field, age, stance, or convenience. It is neither automatically sophisticated nor automatically “bad Arabic.”
الاجتماع أونلاين، بس التقرير لازم يكون بالعربي الرسمي.
l-izhtimēʿ ūnlāyn, bass t-taʾrīr lāzem ykūn b-l-ʿarabi r-rasme.
The meeting is online, but the report has to be in formal Arabic. (professional spoken)
The grammatical frame remains Lebanese. Do not infer from one borrowed noun that the entire clause has switched languages, and do not insert borrowed words merely to perform a Lebanese identity.
Stage 6: Complete formal-contact tasks
Practice professional spoken Arabic, formal email, and the service complaint. The task determines the register: a phone call may be politely Lebanese, while a written complaint to an institution may require MSA.
صارلي تلات أيام ناطر رد؛ فيكن تقولولي وين صار الطلب؟
ṣārle tlēt ayyēm nāṭer radd; fīkon tʾūlūle wēn ṣār ṭ-ṭalab?
I’ve been waiting for a response for three days; can you tell me what happened with the request? (polite spoken Lebanese)
أرجو إفادتي بوضع الطلب في أقرب وقت.
ʾarjū ʾifādatī bi-waḍʿi ṭ-ṭalabi fī ʾaqrabi waqt.
Please inform me of the status of the request as soon as possible. (formal MSA writing)
Milestone checklist and review loops
You are ready for C1 when you can:
- maintain reference time across background, foreground, duration, and projected events;
- construct a concession, reason, consequence, and explicit limitation;
- front a topic while supplying the required resumptive element;
- classify a short clip as mainly Lebanese, mixed, or MSA and cite several grammatical signals;
- explain a code-switch by audience, topic, or setting rather than by declaring it correct or incorrect;
- make a spoken complaint in polite Lebanese and draft the corresponding formal MSA request;
- defend a comparison for two minutes with clear stance and clause linkage.
If aspect choices follow English auxiliaries word for word, return to rhetorical aspect. If long arguments become strings of و “and,” revisit the clause-linking pages. If a fronted topic loses its internal pronoun, return to left dislocation. If you classify media solely by qāf pronunciation, review dialect identification and inspect morphology too. If a formal email reads like a transcribed phone call, return to formal email.
Two diagnostic mini-scenarios
Scenario 1: compare two proposals. State your position, concede one advantage of the option you reject, explain a consequence, front the main issue as a topic, and conclude with a recommendation. If every relation is conveyed by “and,” review Stage 2; if the topic has no resumptive pronoun, review Stage 3.
Scenario 2: analyze a news clip. Identify the voice-over, interview, and on-screen text separately. For each, record whether verb morphology and particles are Lebanese, mixed, or MSA. Then retell the story in stable Lebanese rather than imitating the formal announcer’s q and j inside an otherwise colloquial sentence.
Common mistakes
1. Keeping the b- prefix after رح in a future progressive.
❌ بكرا رح بكون عم بشتغل للثمانية.
Incorrect in the Beirut baseline — the verb after raḥ is bare, even though the following progressive contains ʿam.
✅ بكرا رح كون عم بشتغل للثمانية.
bukra raḥ kūn ʿam bishtaghel la-t-tmēnye.
Tomorrow I’ll be working until eight.
2. Fronting a prepositional topic without resumption.
❌ هالموضوع، نحنا حكينا قبل.
Incorrect — the clause needs the resumptive form fī after ‘talked about.’
✅ هالموضوع، نحنا حكينا فيه قبل.
hal-mawḍūʿ, niḥna ḥkēna fī ʾabel.
This issue—we discussed it before.
3. Treating a formal written request as a word-for-word spoken template.
❌ أرجو إفادتي بوضع الطلب.
Register mismatch in an ordinary service phone call — this is formal MSA wording suited to writing.
✅ فيكن تقولولي وين صار الطلب؟
fīkon tʾūlūle wēn ṣār ṭ-ṭalab?
Can you tell me what happened with the request? (polite spoken Lebanese)
