Large Lebanese numbers are built in descending chunks: millions, thousands, hundreds, then the final two-digit number. و connects the nonzero chunks, while the last 21–99 chunk still keeps Lebanese unit-before-decade order. Thus 3,245 is تلات آلاف وميتين وخمسة وأربعين—“three thousands and two hundred and five-and-forty.”
The system is easier when you separate two questions: which form does the scale word take—ألف، ألفين، آلاف—and which form does the final counted noun take? The examples are informal urban Lebanese. Formal spellings and case endings such as ثلاثمائة or ألفان are not the spoken baseline.
The hundreds are lexicalized forms
| Value | Lebanese form | With a counted noun |
|---|---|---|
These are not freely assembled from the standalone units on every occasion. In particular, Beirut-oriented تلتمية is a conventional hundred form, not تلاتة مية. Before a counted noun, the final ـة is linked as t: fuller miyyet ktēb and contracted mīt ktēb both occur. The table shows the fuller variant and the examples below use compact mīt; ordinary spelling keeps ة in both: مية كتاب.
بالمخزن تلتمية صندوق، وكلن مرقمين.
bil-makhzan tlitmīt ṣondūʾ, w-killon mraʾʾamīn.
There are three hundred boxes in the warehouse, and they're all numbered. (informal; construct hundred and singular صندوق)
طبعنا تمنمية نسخة قبل المعرض.
ṭbaʿna tmanmīt noskha ʾabl el-maʿraḍ.
We printed eight hundred copies before the exhibition. (informal; construct hundred and singular noun)
One, two, three-to-ten, and eleven-plus scale words
ألف “thousand,” مليون “million,” and مليار “billion” behave like countable scale nouns. Their form depends on the number immediately before them. The smaller forms they select come from the systems covered under numbers three through ten and compound numbers.
| Quantity | Thousand | Million | Billion | Pattern |
|---|---|---|---|---|
The surviving construct forms matter: تلات آلاف, not standalone تلاتة before آلاف. For two, the dual scale word itself carries the number: ألفين and مليونين, not an English-like “two thousands.” From eleven upward, the scale is singular.
With مليون and مليار, everyday Lebanese also permits leveling toward an independent numeral plus a singular scale word, such as تلاتة مليون or سبعة مليار (informal; variable). The plural-scale pattern in the table is a reliable careful baseline, not the only colloquial pattern. تلات آلاف, by contrast, is much more entrenched than a leveled singular with ألف.
المشروع بحاجة لتلات آلاف متر كابل.
el-mashrūʿ b-ḥēzhe la-tlēt ālēf meter kēbel.
The project needs three thousand meters of cable. (informal; construct numeral, plural آلاف, then singular measure noun)
الفيديو جاب مليونين مشاهدة بأسبوع.
el-vīdyo zhēb malyōnēn mshēhade b-osbūʿ.
The video got two million views in a week. (informal; dual scale and singular مشاهدة)
الشركة باعت خمس ملايين نسخة.
esh-shirke bēʿit khams malēyīn noskha.
The company sold five million copies. (informal; construct خمس plus plural scale)
Connect descending chunks with و
Say the largest nonzero chunk first and descend. و normally introduces each following nonzero chunk. Inside the final compound, another و connects unit to decade.
العدد تلات آلاف وميتين وخمسة وأربعين.
el-ʿadad tlēt ālēf w-mitēn w-khamse w-arbaʿīn.
The number is 3,245. (informal; thousands, hundreds, then unit-and-decade)
السعر مليون وميتين وخمسين ألف دولار.
es-siʿer malyōn w-mitēn w-khamsīn alef dōlār.
The price is 1,250,000 dollars. (informal; million chunk plus 250-thousand chunk)
الرقم تلات ملايين وميتين وخمسين ألف وسبعمية.
er-raʾam tlēt malēyīn w-mitēn w-khamsīn alef w-sabʿmiyye.
The figure is 3,250,700. (informal; three descending scale chunks)
Do not insert و between a numeral and the scale it directly counts: تلات آلاف, not “three and thousands.” The conjunction sits between completed chunks.
The final component controls the noun form
An exact hundred, thousand, or million takes a singular counted noun: تلتمية كتاب، تلات آلاف كتاب. If a smaller remainder follows, that last component controls the form closest to the noun.
| Number | Lebanese phrase | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 3,000 books | تلات آلاف كتاب | scale construction; singular كتاب |
| 3,003 books | تلات آلاف وتلات كتب | final 3 directly selects plural كتب |
| 3,021 books | تلات آلاف وواحد وعشرين كتاب | final compound selects singular كتاب |
| 3,100 books | تلات آلاف ومية كتاب | exact hundred selects singular كتاب |
وصل تلات آلاف وتلات كتب زيادة.
wiṣel tlēt ālēf w-tlēt ktob zyēde.
An extra 3,003 books arrived. (informal; final three requires the plural كتب)
سجلوا تلات آلاف وواحد وعشرين طالب.
sazhzhalo tlēt ālēf w-wāḥad w-ʿishrīn ṭāleb.
They registered 3,021 students. (informal; final compound requires singular طالب)
There is no honest shortcut that eliminates these smaller-number rules. Chunking makes the large value manageable, but the final chunk still retains Lebanese noun grammar.
Reading a price aloud
تمن الجهاز ألفين وتلتمية وخمسة وأربعين دولار.
taman el-zhēhēz alfēn w-tlitmiyye w-khamse w-arbaʿīn dōlār.
The device costs 2,345 dollars. (informal; price read in descending chunks)
In a price, speakers may pause lightly after a scale chunk—alfēn | w-tlitmiyye | w-khamse w-arbaʿīn—but they do not reverse the order of chunks. Written separators help the eye; the conjunctions help the ear.
Exact versus approximate quantity: a dialogue
قديش نسخة بدنا نطبع، حوالي تلات آلاف؟
ʾaddēsh noskha bidna niṭbaʿ, ḥawālay tlēt ālēf?
Nour: How many copies should we print—around three thousand? (informal; approximate scale number)
العدد النهائي تلات آلاف ومية وسبعة وعشرين نسخة بالضبط.
el-ʿadad en-nihēʾe tlēt ālēf w-miyye w-sabʿa w-ʿishrīn noskha biḍ-ḍabṭ.
Rami: The final total is exactly 3,127 copies. (informal; exact chunks and singular noun after 27)
Common Mistakes
Pluralizing both the scale and the counted noun
❌ طبعنا تلات آلاف نسخ.
Incorrect in the neutral counting pattern—the plural is on آلاف; the counted noun is singular.
✅ طبعنا تلات آلاف نسخة.
ṭbaʿna tlēt ālēf noskha.
We printed three thousand copies. (informal)
Ignoring the construct numeral before a plural scale
❌ الميزانية تلاتة ملايين دولار.
Non-baseline form—before plural ملايين, use construct تلات.
✅ الميزانية تلات ملايين دولار.
el-mīzēniyye tlēt malēyīn dōlār.
The budget is three million dollars. (informal; construct numeral plus plural scale)
Importing a formal hundred into conversation
❌ عنا ثلاثمائة طلب.
Register mismatch—ثلاثمائة is formal written Arabic, not the urban Lebanese production form.
✅ عنا تلتمية طلب.
ʿinna tlitmīt ṭalab.
We have three hundred requests. (informal Lebanese; construct hundred before the counted noun)
Dropping the conjunction between chunks
❌ الرقم ألفين تلتمية خمسة وأربعين.
Hard to parse as a composed number—completed scale chunks are normally linked with و.
✅ الرقم ألفين وتلتمية وخمسة وأربعين.
er-raʾam alfēn w-tlitmiyye w-khamse w-arbaʿīn.
The number is 2,345. (informal; conjunctions mark chunk boundaries)
Letting the leading scale override the final remainder
❌ وصل تلتمية وتلاتة كتاب.
Incorrect—when the final remainder is three, it directly selects a plural noun and uses construct تلات.
✅ وصل تلتمية وتلات كتب.
wiṣel tlitmiyye w-tlēt ktob.
Three hundred and three books arrived. (informal; final component governs)
Key Takeaways
Learn مية، ميتين، تلتمية... as Lebanese hundred forms. Treat ألف، مليون، مليار as scale nouns: singular for one and 11+, dual for two, plural after 3–10 with a construct numeral. Read from the largest chunk downward and connect completed chunks with و. Exact scales take a singular counted noun, but a final remainder such as 3 or 27 reactivates its own noun rule.
