Lebanese distinguishes a rough quantity from an explicit range. حوالي خمسين and تقريبا خمسين both center an estimate near fifty; شي خمسين is a more conversational “some fifty / about fifty”; بين أربعين وستين gives actual lower and upper bounds. These choices tell the listener how much precision to expect.
Approximation sits outside the numeral phrase. It does not cancel the grammar inside it: “about three books” is still شي تلات كتب, while “about twenty-three books” is حوالي تلاتة وعشرين كتاب. Review Compound Numbers if the noun form after 21–99 is not yet automatic.
Three ways to say “about”
حوالي normally stands directly before a quantity and means “around, approximately.” تقريبا is an adverb meaning “approximately”; it can modify a number or summarize an estimate more broadly. شي + number is distinctly conversational (informal) and presents a rough quantity without sounding statistical.
| Meaning | Lebanese form | Romanization | Counted-noun grammar |
|---|---|---|---|
| about 3 books | شي تلات كتب | shi tlēt ktob | 3–10 + plural noun |
| around 10 minutes | حوالي عشر دقايق | ḥawāle ʿashar dʾāyeʾ | construct ten + plural noun |
| approximately 2 hours | تقريبا ساعتين | taʾrīban sēʿtēn | dual noun |
| around 25 people | حوالي خمسة وعشرين شخص | ḥawāle khamse w-ʿishrīn shakheṣ | compound + singular noun |
| from 3 to 5 books | من تلات كتب لخمس كتب | min tlēt ktob la-khames ktob | each endpoint has a 3–10 count phrase |
| between 10 and 15 minutes | بين عشرة وخمستعشر دقيقة | bēn ʿashara w-khamstaʿashar dʾīʾa | compact range; final teen selects singular noun |
وصل شي تلاتين شخص، ويمكن بعد يجي حدا.
wiṣel shi tlētīn shakheṣ, w-yimkin baʿd yizhe ḥada.
About thirty people arrived, and someone else may still come. (informal rough count)
الطريق بياخد حوالي عشرين دقيقة بلا عجقة.
eṭ-ṭarīʾ byēkhod ḥawāle ʿishrīn dʾīʾa bla ʿazhʾa.
The trip takes around twenty minutes without traffic. (informal estimate with a condition)
خلصنا تقريبا نص المشروع.
khallaṣna taʾrīban noṣṣ el-mashrūʿ.
We've finished approximately half the project. (neutral estimate of progress)
The three markers overlap, but not perfectly. شي sounds at home in conversation and often conveys a quick impression. حوالي tightly frames a numerical neighborhood. تقريبا can describe a calculation, fraction, time, or degree of completion. In formal writing, نحو and قرابة may appear (formal); they are recognition forms, not replacements learners need in ordinary Beirut conversation.
Where شي sits
Approximate شي comes before the complete number phrase. Before an overt noun, the number keeps its counted-noun form: شي خمس دقايق. If the noun is understood, the number stands independently and keeps its citation form: شي خمسة “about five [of them].”
بدنا شي خمس كراسي زيادة.
badna shi khames karēse zyēde.
We need about five more chairs. (informal; overt plural noun)
قديش بدنا كراسي زيادة؟ شي خمسة.
ʾaddēsh badna karēse zyēde? shi khamse.
How many more chairs do we need? About five. (informal; noun omitted, standalone numeral)
This alternation is the same one found without approximation: خمس كراسي but standalone خمسة. Treating شي as if it froze the following number leads to an audible error.
A centered estimate is not a range
حوالي خمسين says that fifty is a reasonable center, but it does not specify hard limits. If both endpoints matter, state them with بين ... و... or من ... لـ....
في بين أربعين وخمسين شخص.
fī bēn arbaʿīn w-khamsīn shakheṣ.
There are between forty and fifty people. (neutral bounded range)
التوصيل بياخد من تلات أيام لخمس أيام.
et-tawṣīl byēkhod min tlēt ayyēm la-khames ayyēm.
Delivery takes from three to five days. (neutral service estimate; both endpoints stated)
بين ... و... conceptualizes the interval between two bounds. من ... لـ... highlights the span from a starting bound to an ending bound. Whether endpoints are legally included depends on the actual rule; grammar alone does not settle contractual inclusion.
An أو expression gives alternatives, not an interval: عشرين أو تلاتين means “twenty or thirty,” whereas بين عشرين وتلاتين allows values throughout the range. In rapid informal speech, adjacent numbers can suggest a rough range, but the explicit frames are safer whenever the bounds matter.
Open bounds: more than, less than, at least
Use أكتر من “more than” and أقل من “less than” for open bounds. عالأقل means “at least,” while بالكتير means “at most” (informal). These expressions are not vague: each makes a logical claim about which side of a boundary is allowed.
بدنا عالأقل عشر كراسي، وبالكتير خمستعشر كرسي.
badna ʿal-aʾall ʿashar karēse, w-bil-ktīr khamstaʿashar korse.
We need at least ten chairs and at most fifteen. (informal; lower and upper limits)
إذا السعر أكتر من مية دولار، ما رح آخده.
iza s-siʿer aktar min miyye dōlār, ma raḥ ēkhdo.
If the price is more than a hundred dollars, I won't take it. (informal; price threshold read aloud)
English up to is famously ambiguous between a maximum and an expected target. Lebanese بالكتير explicitly gives a maximum. For permissions, quotas, or deadlines, choose the bound expression rather than relying on conversational implication.
Exactness markers and appropriate precision
بالضبط means “exactly.” تمام can confirm that a stated amount, hour, or location is exact in context. An estimate and بالضبط normally conflict: تقريبا خمسين بالضبط says both “approximately” and “exactly” unless the speaker is contrasting an approximate report with a later exact figure.
بلش الاجتماع الساعة تسعة بالضبط.
ballash el-izhtimēʿ es-sēʿa tisʿa biḍ-ḍabṭ.
The meeting started at exactly nine. (neutral; exact time read aloud)
وصلنا حوالي تسعة، يمكن قبلها بخمس دقايق.
wiṣelna ḥawāle tisʿa, yimkin ʾabla b-khames dʾāyeʾ.
We arrived around nine, maybe five minutes before. (informal recollection; approximate time)
Precision is pragmatic. Approximation is normal for remembered crowd size, travel time, and early planning. It is inappropriate for a phone code, a medication amount, a bank total, or a contractual deadline when the exact value is available and consequential. “Sounding less certain” is not automatically more polite.
Approximate versus exact: a repair dialogue
التصليح بيكلف حوالي ميتين دولار، صح؟
et-taṣlīḥ byiklaf ḥawāle mitēn dōlār, ṣaḥḥ?
Customer: The repair costs around two hundred dollars, right? (informal; approximate price read aloud)
هاد تقدير أولي؛ السعر بين مية وتمانين وميتين وعشرين دولار.
hād taʾdīr awwale; es-siʿer bēn miyye w-tmēnīn w-mitēn w-ʿishrīn dōlār.
Technician: That's an initial estimate; the price is between 180 and 220 dollars. (neutral; bounded estimate)
قبل ما تبلش، خبرني بالمبلغ النهائي بالضبط.
ʾabl ma tballesh, khabbirne bil-mablagh en-nihēʾe biḍ-ḍabṭ.
Customer: Before you start, tell me the exact final amount. (informal request for precision)
The first figure is a center, the second supplies bounds, and the requested final amount removes approximation. This progression is common in estimates and quotations; each step has a different communicative commitment.
Common Mistakes
Keeping the standalone numeral before a plural noun
❌ بدنا حوالي تلاتة كتب.
Incorrect for the Beirut baseline — approximation does not block construct تلات before a plural noun.
✅ بدنا حوالي تلات كتب.
badna ḥawāle tlēt ktob.
We need about three books. (informal)
Keeping an English plural after a compound
❌ وصل شي خمسة وعشرين أشخاص.
Incorrect — a compound above twenty takes a singular counted noun.
✅ وصل شي خمسة وعشرين شخص.
wiṣel shi khamse w-ʿishrīn shakheṣ.
About twenty-five people arrived. (informal)
Treating an estimate as a bounded interval
❌ حوالي خمسين يعني أكيد بين خمسة وأربعين وخمسة وخمسين.
Incorrect inference — حوالي supplies a center, not guaranteed numerical bounds.
✅ في بين خمسة وأربعين وخمسة وخمسين شخص.
fī bēn khamse w-arbaʿīn w-khamse w-khamsīn shakheṣ.
There are between forty-five and fifty-five people. (neutral; explicit bounds)
Combining contradiction without a contrast
❌ الحساب تقريبا خمسين دولار بالضبط.
Contradictory without special context — تقريبا weakens precision while بالضبط asserts it.
✅ التقدير تقريبا خمسين دولار، والحساب النهائي تمانية وأربعين بالضبط.
et-taʾdīr taʾrīban khamsīn dōlār, wil-ḥsēb en-nihēʾe tmēnye w-arbaʿīn biḍ-ḍabṭ.
The estimate is about fifty dollars, and the exact final bill is forty-eight. (neutral contrast)
Importing case-marked MSA approximation
❌ حضر نحو ثلاثين شخصا.
ḥaḍara naḥwa thalāthīna shakhṣan
Register mismatch — grammatical formal Arabic, but not the urban Lebanese production baseline.
✅ حضر حوالي تلاتين شخص.
ḥaḍar ḥawāle tlētīn shakheṣ.
Around thirty people attended. (neutral Lebanese)
Key Takeaways
- Use حوالي for a numerical neighborhood, تقريبا for a broader estimate, and شي + number for conversational approximation.
- Preserve the number phrase inside the approximation: شي تلات كتب but شي خمسة when the noun is omitted.
- Use بين ... و... or من ... لـ... when two actual bounds matter.
- Distinguish a center, a range, a minimum/maximum, and an exact figure; they make different commitments.
- Match precision to the consequences: estimates are useful for planning, but codes, doses, payable totals, and deadlines may require exact values.
