A distributive expression answers “how much for each one?”, “in groups of how many?”, or “how often per unit?” Lebanese uses several different constructions because these are different meanings: كل واحد كتابين gives two books to each person, فاتوا اتنين اتنين arranges entry in pairs, and مرتين بالأسبوع states a frequency rate.
English each, every, and per overlap, but they are not one Lebanese word. Choose a construction according to what is being distributed: an object, membership in a group, turns in a sequence, or a rate over time. The internal form of a counted phrase still follows Three through Ten with Counted Nouns and the later cardinal patterns.
كل واحد and كل وحدة: each individual
Use كل واحد for each masculine or mixed individual and كل وحدة for each feminine individual. Add من plus a defined set when the set must be named: كل واحد من الموظفين “each of the employees.” The phrase is grammatically singular, so the verb and pronouns are singular.
| Distribution | Lebanese form | Romanization | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| one item each | كل واحد نسخة | kill wāḥad noskha | each person gets one copy |
| two items each | كل واحد نسختين | kill wāḥad noskhtēn | dual noun carries “two” |
| three items each | كل واحد تلات نسخ | kill wāḥad tlēt nosakh | construct numeral + plural noun |
| each woman | كل وحدة من الصبايا | kill waḥde min eṣ-ṣabēya | feminine individual |
| two by two | اتنين اتنين | tnēn tnēn | pairwise grouping |
| per person | بالشخص / لكل شخص | bish-shakheṣ / la-kill shakheṣ | rate denominator |
| twice a week | مرتين بالأسبوع | martēn bil-usbūʿ | frequency per time period |
عطيت كل واحد نسختين من البرنامج.
ʿaṭēt kill wāḥad noskhtēn min el-barnēmazh.
I gave each person two copies of the program. (informal; singular distributor plus dual object)
كل وحدة من الصبايا اختارت لون مختلف.
kill waḥde min eṣ-ṣabēya ikhtāret lawn mokhtalef.
Each of the women chose a different color. (informal; feminine distributor and singular verb)
The word مختلف often makes the distributive reading visible: the colors can differ because choices are evaluated one person at a time. Without كل وحدة, a plural subject may describe one collective choice.
Repeating the numeral creates groups
Numeral repetition is an adverbial pattern: واحد واحد “one by one,” اتنين اتنين “two by two,” تلاتة تلاتة “three at a time/in groups of three.” The repeated forms are standalone number names because no counted noun immediately follows them.
فوتوا واحد واحد حتى ما يعجق الباب.
fōto wāḥad wāḥad ḥatta ma yiʿzhoʾ el-bēb.
Go in one at a time so the doorway doesn't get crowded. (informal instruction)
قسمنا المشاركين تلاتة تلاتة.
ʾasamna l-mushērkīn tlēte tlēte.
We divided the participants into groups of three. (informal)
الصبايا طلعوا تنتين تنتين عالمنصة.
eṣ-ṣabēya ṭilʿo tintēn tintēn ʿal-manaṣṣe.
The women went up onto the stage two at a time. (informal; feminine pairs)
Repeated numerals specify group size, not necessarily each person's allotment. وزعنا الأقلام تلاتة تلاتة can mean that the pens were handled in batches of three; عطينا كل طالب تلات أقلام unambiguously assigns three pens to every student.
Formal Arabic has case-sensitive distributive options and formal number forms such as اثنين اثنين (formal). Everyday Beirut uses its ordinary colloquial citation forms and no case endings.
Each, all, and distributive scope
Compare a plural statement with an overt distributor:
- الطلاب قروا كتابين can report that the students, collectively, read two books; context may allow other readings.
- كل طالب قرا كتابين assigns two books to every student. Different students may have read different pairs.
- كل الطلاب قروا كتابين quantifies over the whole group but keeps plural agreement; it may still need context to settle whether the same two books are meant.
كل طالب قرا مقالتين واختار وحدة يناقشها.
kill ṭāleb ʾara maʾāltēn wikhtār waḥde ynēʾisha.
Each student read two articles and chose one to discuss. (neutral; distributive singular scope)
كل الطلاب قروا نفس المقالتين.
kill eṭ-ṭollēb ʾaro nafs el-maʾāltēn.
All the students read the same two articles. (neutral; نفس forces shared objects)
The difference matters in totals. If ten students each read two possibly different articles, there are twenty student–article readings, not necessarily twenty distinct articles. Lebanese كل طالب makes the per-student calculation available; it does not by itself claim that the objects differ.
Per-unit rates with بـ and لـ
A rate pairs an amount with a denominator. بالساعة، بالنهار، بالكيلو mean “per hour/day/kilo” in ordinary commercial and practical speech. للشخص and لكل شخص explicitly say “per person / for each person.” These prepositions package the second noun as the unit against which the amount is measured.
بياخد عشرين دولار بالساعة.
byēkhod ʿishrīn dōlār bis-sēʿa.
He charges twenty dollars per hour. (informal; price rate read aloud)
التذكرة بخمستعشر دولار للشخص.
et-tazkara b-khamstaʿashar dōlār lish-shakheṣ.
The ticket is fifteen dollars per person. (neutral service language)
منفحص الضغط مرة كل نص ساعة.
mnifḥaṣ eḍ-ḍaghṭ marra kill noṣṣ sāʿa.
We check the pressure once every half hour. (neutral procedural instruction)
بالساعة describes a normalized rate. كل ساعة describes recurrence from interval to interval. They can coincide, but they answer different questions: pay can be calculated بالساعة, while an alarm rings كل ساعة.
Frequency: times per period
Use مرة “once,” dual مرتين “twice,” or a counted plural such as تلات مرات “three times,” followed by بالأسبوع، بالشهر، بالسنة. The period is singular because it names the denominator of the rate.
بتمرن تلات مرات بالأسبوع، ساعة كل مرة.
btmarran tlēt marrāt bil-usbūʿ, sāʿa kill marra.
I train three times a week, an hour each time. (informal; frequency plus duration per event)
الدوا مرتين بالنهار، مش حبتين مرة وحدة.
ed-dawa martēn bin-nahār, mish ḥabbtēn marra waḥde.
The medicine is twice a day, not two pills at one time. (informal contrast; follow actual medical instructions)
This contrast is semantic, not stylistic. “Two each time” and “two times” describe different dosing structures. In health, legal, or financial instructions, repeat the full quantity, event, and interval rather than relying on context.
Turns and sequence
واحد ورا التاني means “one after the other,” focusing on sequence. كل واحد بدوره means “each person in their turn,” focusing on fair turn allocation. واحد واحد can express both small group size and sequence, so add the fuller phrase when order matters.
احكوا واحد ورا التاني حتى نسمعكن.
iḥko wāḥad wara t-tēne ḥatta nismaʿkon.
Speak one after another so we can hear you. (informal instruction)
كل واحد بيحكي بدوره دقيقتين بالضبط.
kill wāḥad byiḥke b-dawro dʾīʾtēn biḍ-ḍabṭ.
Each person speaks in turn for exactly two minutes. (neutral meeting procedure)
Exact and approximate distribution: an event dialogue
قديش منحط قناني مي عكل طاولة؟
ʾaddēsh mniḥoṭṭ ʾanēne mayy ʿa-kill ṭāwle?
Organizer: How many water bottles do we put on each table? (informal)
أربع قناني بالضبط، وشي عشر كاسات لكل طاولة.
arbaʿ ʾanēne biḍ-ḍabṭ, w-shi ʿashar kēsāt la-kill ṭāwle.
Coordinator: Exactly four bottles, and about ten cups per table. (informal; exact and approximate allotments)
وإذا إجوا ضيوف زيادة، منزيد قنينة لكل طاولة.
w-iza izho ḍyūf zyēde, mnizīd ʾannīne la-kill ṭāwle.
Coordinator: If more guests come, we'll add one bottle to each table. (informal conditional distribution)
Here بالضبط fixes the bottle allotment, while شي عشر leaves the cup count approximate. لكل طاولة identifies the denominator in both plans.
Common Mistakes
Using a plural verb after كل واحد
❌ كل واحد أخدوا نسختين.
Incorrect — كل واحد is grammatically singular and takes a singular verb.
✅ كل واحد أخد نسختين.
kill wāḥad akhad noskhtēn.
Each person took two copies. (informal)
Leaving the noun singular after three
❌ عطينا كل واحد تلات نسخة.
Incorrect — three through ten take a plural counted noun.
✅ عطينا كل واحد تلات نسخ.
ʿaṭēna kill wāḥad tlēt nosakh.
We gave each person three copies. (informal)
Copying English “two books each” with a separate two
❌ كل واحد اتنين كتاب.
Incorrect — exactly two is normally expressed by the noun's dual.
✅ كل واحد كتابين.
kill wāḥad ktēbēn.
Each person gets two books. (informal)
Importing formal number forms
❌ دخلوا اثنين اثنين.
dakhalū ithnayni ithnayni
Register mismatch — this is formal morphology, not ordinary Beirut grouping language.
✅ فاتوا اتنين اتنين.
fēto tnēn tnēn.
They went in two by two. (informal Beirut)
Confusing frequency with amount per event
❌ باخد حبتين بالنهار، يعني حبتين كل مرة.
Unsafe inference — a daily total does not state how many are taken at each event.
✅ باخد حبة مرتين بالنهار.
bēkhod ḥabbe martēn bin-nahār.
I take one pill twice a day. (informal; explicit event amount and frequency)
Key Takeaways
- Use كل واحد/وحدة to assign a quantity to each individual; keep agreement singular.
- Repeat standalone numerals for group size: واحد واحد، اتنين اتنين، تلاتة تلاتة.
- Use بـ/لـ + unit for a rate denominator and كل + interval for recurrence.
- Distinguish times per period from amount per event, especially in consequential instructions.
- Mark exact and approximate allotments separately; distribution does not make an estimate exact.
