عمل Collocations

Lebanese عمل ʿimil covers much of English do and make, but it is not a universal replacement for either. It combines freely with concrete results—عمل قهوة “made coffee”—and with a learned set of event nouns—عمل حجز “made a reservation,” عمل غلطة “made a mistake.” Elsewhere Lebanese chooses another verb: everyday “make a decision” is أخد قرار or simply قرر, and employment is normally اشتغل.

The productive skill is therefore not “translate do/make as عمل.” It is “recognize the semantic family, then retrieve the Lebanese collocation.” This page concentrates on those families and on the grammar that عمل supplies: person, tense/aspect, negation, objects, and beneficiaries. For the full conjugation, see the عمل verb reference.

In the light-verb combinations, the noun supplies the event type and عمل supplies the grammatical viewpoint. Compare عملنا اجتماع “we held a meeting,” منعمل اجتماع كل شهر “we hold a meeting every month,” and رح نعمل اجتماع “we'll hold a meeting.” The noun stays stable while the verb locates and profiles the event.

💡
Store a light-verb expression as a mini-frame: عمل حجز باسم...، عمل اجتماع مع...، عمل فحص لـ.... The complement is part of the collocation, not decoration added after translating English.

Tasks versus employment

عمل شغله means “did his work / did his job” in the sense of completing a task. To state where someone is employed, use اشتغل / بيشتغل. The question شو بتعمل؟ can ask “What do you do?” and invite an occupation, but the answer still often uses بشتغل.

خلصت شغلي بكير لأنو عملت كل شي كان مطلوب مني.

khallaṣet shoghle bakkīr la-anno ʿmilt kill shī kēn maṭlūb minne.

I finished work early because I did everything that was required of me. (completed task)

شو بتعمل هلق؟ — عم براجع الحسابات.

shū btiʿmil hallaʾ? — ʿam brēzheʿ el-ḥsēbāt.

What are you doing now? — I'm reviewing the accounts. (current activity question)

وين بتشتغلي؟ — بشتغل بمختبر قريب من الجامعة.

wēn btishtighle? — bashtighil b-mokhtabar ʾrīb min el-zhēmʿa.

Where do you work? — I work at a laboratory near the university. (employment; female addressee)

English uses work for both the tasks and the employment relation. Lebanese separates the collocation more sharply: عمل الشغل completes work; اشتغل بالمختبر states employment.

Making a result: food, drink, and copies

With a result noun, عمل describes bringing something into existence or preparing it. A direct-object suffix can replace the product once it is known. A person benefiting from the result is marked with لـ.

عم بعمل قهوة للضيوف، بدك فنجان؟

ʿam baʿmil ʾahwe laḍ-ḍyūf, baddak finzhēn?

I'm making coffee for the guests; would you like a cup? (current preparation)

عملت نسخة زيادة وعطيتها للموظفة الجديدة.

ʿmilt noskha zyēde w-ʿaṭayta lal-mwaẓẓafe l-zhdīde.

I made an extra copy and gave it to the new employee. (created result, then feminine object suffix)

إذا بدك، بعملك سندويشة قبل ما تطلع.

iza baddak, baʿmillak sandwīshe ʾabel ma tṭlaʿ.

If you want, I'll make you a sandwich before you leave. (beneficiary fused with لـ)

بعملك here means “I make for you,” not “I make you.” That distinction becomes clear when both roles appear: the sandwich is the direct object, while ـك is the beneficiary.

💡
Ask whether the suffix is the thing made or the person served. عملتها = “I made/did it”; عملتلها نسخة = “I made a copy for her.”

Mistakes, noise, and problems

عمل غلطة packages a mistake as a bounded event. عمل ضجة means cause noise, commotion, or attention; it is stronger than merely producing an audible sound. عمل مشكلة can mean cause or create a problem, not simply encounter one.

عملت غلطة بالرقم ورجعت صححتها قبل ما أبعت الملف.

ʿmilt ghalṭa bir-raʾem w-rizhiʿet ṣaḥḥaḥta ʾabel ma ibʿat el-malaf.

I made a mistake in the number and corrected it before sending the file. (bounded error and repair)

ما تعملوا ضجة بالممر لأنو الاجتماع بعده مكمل.

ma tiʿmlo ḍazhzhe bil-mamarr la-anno l-izhtimēʿ baʿdo mkammel.

Don't make a commotion in the corridor because the meeting is still going. (prohibition to a group)

التأخير عمل مشكلة بالتوصيل، بس لقينا حل.

et-taʾkhīr ʿimil moshkle bit-tawṣīl, bass lʾēna ḥall.

The delay caused a delivery problem, but we found a solution. (causative light-verb meaning)

The subject of عمل need not be human: a delay can “make/create” a problem. Context determines whether English prefers made, caused, or created.

Exercise and organized events

عمل رياضة describes exercising as an activity. عمل حفلة، عمل سهرة، عمل اجتماع present an organized social or work event. The verb does not tell you whether the speaker hosted, arranged, or simply held the event; complements and context do that work.

بعمل رياضة تلات مرات بالأسبوع قبل الشغل.

baʿmil riyāḍa tlēt marrāt bil-osbūʿ ʾabel esh-shoghol.

I exercise three times a week before work. (habitual activity)

رح نعمل حفلة صغيرة عالسطح إذا الطقس ضل منيح.

raḥ niʿmil ḥafle ṣghīre ʿas-saṭeḥ iza ṭ-ṭaʾes ḍall mnīḥ.

We'll have a small party on the roof if the weather stays nice. (future event plan)

عملنا اجتماع مع الفريق تا نوزع المهام.

ʿmilna izhtimēʿ maʿ el-farīʾ ta nwazziʿ el-mahēmm.

We held a meeting with the team to distribute the tasks. (organized work event)

English have a party / hold a meeting / do exercise uses three different verbs. Lebanese can place all three in the عمل family, but that does not make عمل productive with every event noun.

Service events and light-verb meanings

In عمل حجز، عمل فحص، عمل اتصال, the noun names an institutional or service event. The complement after the noun supplies the person, date, topic, or purpose.

عملت حجز باسم رامي لليلة الجمعة.

ʿmilt ḥazhiz b-ism Rāme la-lēlet el-zhomʿa.

I made a reservation under Rami's name for Friday night. (service event with باسم)

لازم اعمل فحص نظر قبل ما غير النظارات.

lāzem aʿmil faḥeṣ naẓar ʾabel ma ghayyer en-naẓẓārāt.

I need to get an eye test before changing my glasses. (bare imperfect after لازم)

اعمل حسابك إنو الصف رح ياخد أكتر من ساعة.

iʿmal ḥsēbak inno ṣ-ṣaff raḥ yākhod aktar min sēʿa.

Plan on the class taking more than an hour. (idiomatic عمل حسابك)

The last expression is not compositionally “do your calculation.” As a whole, عمل حسابه إنو... means to take a circumstance into account.

Decisions expose the collocational boundary

English says make a decision, but ordinary Lebanese favors أخد قرار “took a decision” or the verb قرر “decided.” عمل قرار is a classic word-for-word learner construction.

أخدنا قرار نأجل المشروع أسبوع.

akhadna ʾarār nʾazhzhil el-mashrūʿ osbūʿ.

We decided to postpone the project for a week. (ordinary spoken collocation)

بعده ما قرر إذا بدو يشارك بالنشاط.

baʿdo ma ʾarrar iza baddo yshērik bin-nashāṭ.

He still hasn't decided whether he wants to participate in the activity. (simple lexical verb)

اتخذ قرارا is a normal (formal) MSA expression in reports and institutional writing. It should be labeled as a register choice, not inserted into an otherwise casual Beirut clause and called “more correct.”

Substitution frame: attested event noun plus its complement

Use عمل + learned event noun + complement, replacing only slots that the collocation licenses:

عملنا حجز باسم لمى لأربعة أشخاص.

ʿmilna ḥazhiz b-ism Lama la-arbaʿa ashkhāṣ.

We made a reservation under Lama's name for four people.

عملوا فحص للآلة قبل ما شغلوها.

ʿimlo faḥeṣ lal-āle ʾabel ma shaghghalūha.

They carried out a check on the machine before turning it on.

منعمل اجتماع مع الزبون أول كل شهر.

mniʿmil izhtimēʿ maʿ ez-zabūn awwal kill shaher.

We hold a meeting with the client at the beginning of every month.

This is controlled productivity. Learn حجز، فحص، اجتماع as attested partners; do not assume any English event noun can be translated and placed after عمل.

Dialogue 1: repairing an office mistake

عملت غلطة بالنسخة اللي بعتها للزبون.

ʿmilt ghalṭa bin-noskha lle baʿatta laz-zabūn.

Mira: I made a mistake in the copy I sent to the client.

شو عملت بعد ما انتبهتلا؟

shū ʿmilt baʿd ma intabahtla?

Manager: What did you do after you noticed it?

صححتها وعملت اتصال بالزبون تا وضحله.

ṣaḥḥaḥta w-ʿmilt ittiṣāl biz-zabūn ta waḍḍeḥlo.

Mira: I corrected it and called the client to explain it to him.

منيح، بس اعمل حسابك تراجع الرقم المرة الجاية.

mnīḥ, bass iʿmal ḥsēbak trēzheʿ er-raʾem el-marra l-zhēye.

Manager: Good, but make sure you check the number next time.

Dialogue 2: planning an event

شو رأيكن نعمل سهرة صغيرة الجمعة؟

shū raʾykon niʿmil sahra ṣghīre l-zhomʿa?

Jana: What do you all think about having a small get-together Friday?

فكرة حلوة، بس مين رح يعمل الأكل؟

fikra ḥilwe, bass mīn raḥ yiʿmil el-akel?

Samer: Nice idea, but who will make the food?

أنا بعمل المقبلات، وإنت اعمل حسابك عالحلو.

ana baʿmil el-moʾabbilāt, w-inte iʿmal ḥsēbak ʿal-ḥilw.

Jana: I'll make the appetizers, and you take care of planning the dessert.

Variation and register

The Beirut principal parts are عمل–بيعمل–اعمل ʿimil–byiʿmil–iʿmal. Other Lebanese, Syrian, Palestinian, and Jordanian speakers may differ in short vowels, particular light-verb collocations, or preferred competing verbs (regional). The course uses هاد/هاي when a demonstrative is needed; common Lebanese هيدا/هيدي remain recognized alternatives. Formal writing may replace a colloquial light-verb phrase with أجرى فحصا، عقد اجتماعا، اتخذ قرارا (formal). Those are register choices, not forms to blend casually with Beirut inflection.

Common Mistakes

❌ عملنا قرار نغير الخطة.

Literal transfer from English ‘make a decision’—ordinary Lebanese uses أخد قرار or قرر.

✅ أخدنا قرار نغير الخطة بعد الاجتماع.

akhadna ʾarār nghayyer el-khiṭṭa baʿd el-izhtimēʿ.

We decided to change the plan after the meeting.

❌ أختي بتعمل بشركة تأمين.

Incorrect for employment—عمل is not the ordinary verb meaning ‘work at a company.’

✅ أختي بتشتغل بشركة تأمين ببيروت.

okhte btishtighil b-shirket taʾmīn b-Bērūt.

My sister works at an insurance company in Beirut.

❌ عم اعمل قهوة للكل.

Incorrect course-baseline progressive—عم retains the b-imperfect.

✅ عم بعمل قهوة للكل قبل ما يوصلوا.

ʿam baʿmil ʾahwe lal-kill ʾabel ma yūṣalo.

I'm making coffee for everyone before they arrive.

❌ رح بعمل فحص الأسبوع الجايي.

Incorrect—رح selects the bare imperfect, without b-.

✅ رح اعمل فحص الأسبوع الجايي وبعدها بخبرك.

raḥ aʿmil faḥeṣ el-osbūʿ el-zhēye w-baʿda bkhabbirak.

I'll get a test next week and tell you afterward.

❌ عملتلها المشروع مبارح.

Wrong if she was not the beneficiary—the لـ suffix says the project was done for her.

✅ عملت المشروع مبارح وعملتلا نسخة اليوم.

ʿmilt el-mashrūʿ mbēreḥ w-ʿmiltla noskha l-yōm.

I did the project yesterday and made her a copy today.

Key Takeaways

Treat عمل as a family of collocations, not a universal translation of do/make. It naturally combines with tasks, prepared results, mistakes, disturbances, exercise, events, reservations, and tests. Employment usually uses اشتغل, while decisions favor أخد قرار or قرر. In light-verb phrases, the noun names the event and عمل carries tense, aspect, agreement, negation, and clitics. Distinguish the thing made from the person it is made for.
