Translating English Prepositions Word for Word

English about, at, in, on, for, and with do not map one-to-one onto Lebanese prepositions. حكي عن means “talk about,” but فكر بـ means “think about.” رد على means “reply to,” while حكي مع means “talk with.” A bilingual dictionary gloss names a possible translation; it does not select the Lebanese frame.

The practical solution is to learn a verb, adjective, or time expression together with its preposition and complement pattern. Store فكر بالموضوع / فكر فيه, not bare فكر = think followed by an improvised translation of English about.

The repair check

When a preposition feels uncertain, ask:

  1. Is this preposition selected by a Lebanese verb or adjective?
  2. Does changing it change the participant's role or the verb's meaning?
  3. Is the complement a full noun or a pronoun suffix?
  4. Is this a fixed time, location, or manner chunk?
  5. Did English strand the preposition away from its wh-complement?
💡
Write vocabulary entries as frames: حكي مع حدا عن شي، اتفق مع حدا على شي، رد على حدا/شي. Roles are easier to remember than isolated English prepositions.

Error pair 1: English about does not choose one frame

❌ عم بفكر عن العرض من مبارح.

Incorrect English calque — ordinary Beirut فكر selects بـ with a full noun and فيـ with a suffix.

✅ عم بفكر بالعرض من مبارح وبعدني مش مقرر.

ʿam bafakker bil-ʿareḍ min mbēreḥ w-baʿdne mish mʾarrer.

I've been thinking about the offer since yesterday, and I still haven't decided. (informal; فكر بـ frame)

By contrast, speech topics take عن:

حكينا عن العرض، وبعدين فكرنا فيه كل واحد لحاله.

ḥkēna ʿan el-ʿareḍ, w-baʿdēn fakkarna fī kill wāḥad la-ḥālo.

We talked about the offer, and then each of us thought about it separately. (neutral; حكي عن versus فكر فيـ)

The English gloss about hides two Lebanese relations. See عن and lexical frames.

Error pair 2: distinguish interlocutor from topic

مع introduces the person participating in a conversation; عن introduces its topic.

❌ حكيت عن المدير مع المشكلة.

The roles are reversed: this says ‘about the manager’ and leaves مع before the problem.

✅ حكيت مع المدير عن المشكلة بعد الاجتماع.

ḥakēt maʿ el-mdīr ʿan el-moshkle baʿd el-izhtimēʿ.

I spoke with the manager about the problem after the meeting. (neutral; person versus topic)

This is a meaning consequence, not cosmetic style. Swapping the phrases swaps who participated and who or what was discussed.

Error pair 3: reply takes على

English reply to tempts learners to translate to with لـ. The ordinary Lebanese frame is رد على.

❌ رديت للرسالة بس ما ردوا لي.

Incorrect frame for replying; لـ expresses other recipient/benefactive relations.

✅ رديت عالرسالة، بس هني ما ردوا عليي.

raddēt ʿar-risēle, bass hinne ma raddo ʿalayye.

I replied to the message, but they didn't reply to me. (informal; full noun and suffixed على)

The pronoun attaches to the selected preposition: عليي, not directly to the verb.

Error pair 4: Beirut full-noun location uses بـ

Formal Arabic and several regional systems use في + full noun for “in.” That form is grammatical in those systems but is the wrong production choice for this course's urban Beirut baseline, which uses attached بـ.

❌ الملف في الخزانة الكبيرة.

Not the active full-DP pattern taught here; use attached بـ before the place noun.

✅ الملف بالخزانة الكبيرة تحت الأوراق.

el-malaf bil-khizēne l-kbīre taḥt el-awrāʾ.

The file is in the large cabinet under the papers. (neutral Beirut location)

Containment does not force في. بالخزانة، بالجارور، بالكاسة are ordinary Beirut forms before full nouns.

Error pair 5: the pronoun counterpart is فيـ

The complement's shape changes the prepositional stem. With a pronoun, Beirut normally uses فيـ + suffix.

❌ الخزانة كبيرة، وحطيت الملف بها.

Grammatical in formal or mixed Arabic, but بها is a register mismatch in an ordinary Beirut sentence; use فيها.

✅ الخزانة كبيرة، وحطيت الملف فيها عالرف التاني.

el-khizēne kbīre, w-ḥaṭṭēt el-malaf fiyya ʿar-raff et-tēne.

The cabinet is large, and I put the file in it on the second shelf. (informal; فيـ suffix)

The production pair is بالخزانة / فيها. The بـ and في pages explain the entire alternation.

💡
For Beirut location and selected بـ frames, memorize noun–pronoun pairs: بالمكتب / فيه، بالشركة / فيها، بالموضوع / فيه.

Error pair 6: time expressions are chunks

English chooses at five, on Friday, in the morning, and for two years. Lebanese packages each relation differently.

❌ الاجتماع في الجمعة في خمسة.

Word-for-word English/formal transfer; neither time phrase is ordinary conversational Beirut usage.

✅ الاجتماع الجمعة عالخمسة بعد الظهر.

el-izhtimēʿ el-zhomʿa ʿal-khamse baʿd eẓ-ẓoher.

The meeting is Friday at five in the afternoon. (neutral spoken time expressions)

صارلي سنتين بشتغل بهالشركة.

ṣārle santēn bishtaghel b-hal-shirke.

I've been working at this company for two years. (informal; ongoing duration with صارلي)

There is no master table where English at/on/in/for each receives one Lebanese equivalent. Store عالخمسة، الجمعة، بالليل، من مبارح، صارلي سنتين as time constructions.

Error pair 7: do not strand the preposition

English can place with, about, or for at the end of a question. Lebanese normally keeps the preposition directly before مين or شو.

❌ شو دفعت الحساب فيه؟

English-style stranding for neutral ‘What did you pay the bill with?’

✅ بشو دفعت الحساب، بالبطاقة ولا كاش؟

b-shū dfaʿet el-ḥsēb, bil-biṭāʾa walla kēsh?

What did you pay the bill with, by card or cash? (neutral instrument question)

✅ مع مين كنت عم بتحكي لما رنيتلك؟

maʿ mīn kent ʿam btiḥke lamma rannētlak?

Who were you talking with when I called you? (informal; intact prepositional wh-phrase)

Preposition placement survives both fronted and allowed in-situ wh-phrases: مع مين حكيت؟ / حكيت مع مين؟.

Error pair 8: English phrasal verbs do not decompose literally

English look for is one lexical verb plus a particle/preposition. Lebanese uses a different verb frame: دور على or فتش على.

❌ عم بتطلع للمفاتيح من الصبح.

Calque of English ‘look for’; تطلع does not create the intended search frame with لـ.

✅ عم بدور عالمفاتيح من الصبح وما لقيتن.

ʿam badawwer ʿal-mafātīḥ min eṣ-ṣobeḥ w-ma lʾēton.

I've been looking for the keys since morning and haven't found them. (informal; دور على frame)

Similarly, English wait for does not mean that Lebanese must add the ordinary word for for. Use the attested valency of نطر: ناطرك “waiting for you,” ناطر الباص “waiting for the bus.”

Adjective frames matter too

Preposition selection is not limited to verbs.

❌ هي مهتمة عن التصوير وخايفة على الطيران.

English-based frame choices obscure the intended ‘interested in photography and afraid of flying.’

✅ هي مهتمة بالتصوير وخايفة من الطيران.

hiyye mhtamme bit-taṣwīr w-khēyfe min eṭ-ṭayarēn.

She's interested in photography and afraid of flying. (neutral; adjective frames)

Record مهتم بـ، مبسوط بـ، زعلان من، خايف من like verb frames.

Short repair dialogue

أنا فكرت عن المشكلة وحكيت للمدير عليها.

ana fakkaret ʿan el-moshkle w-ḥakēt lil-mdīr ʿalēha.

Learner: I thought about the problem and spoke to the manager about it. (two English-driven frames)

بدك فكر بـ، وحكي مع حدا عن شي.

baddak fakker b-, w-ḥike maʿ ḥada ʿan she.

Partner: You need فكر بـ, and حكي مع someone عن something. (informal frame coaching)

يعني فكرت بالمشكلة وحكيت مع المدير عنها؟

yaʿne fakkaret bil-moshkle w-ḥakēt maʿ el-mdīr ʿanna?

Learner: So, ‘I thought about the problem and spoke with the manager about it’?

مظبوط. احفظ الفعل مع إطاره، مش مع ترجمة حرفية.

maẓbūṭ. iḥfaẓ el-fiʿel maʿ iṭāro, mish maʿ tarzhame ḥarfiyye.

Partner: Exactly. Memorize the verb with its frame, not with a literal translation.

Common Mistakes

Using لـ after اتصل

❌ اتصلت للعيادة تا غير الموعد.

Incorrect frame in the Beirut baseline; اتصل takes بـ with a full noun.

✅ اتصلت بالعيادة تا غير موعدي.

ittaṣalet bil-ʿiyēde ta ghayyer mawʿede.

I called the clinic to change my appointment.

Mixing a full-noun frame with its suffix form

❌ فكرت بالمشروع وبعدين فكرت به.

Register blend in the taught Beirut system — the pronominal counterpart is فيه.

✅ فكرت بالمشروع وبعدين رجعت فكرت فيه.

fakkaret bil-mashrūʿ w-baʿdēn rzhiʿet fakkaret fī.

I thought about the project and then thought about it again.

Translating English at in every time phrase

❌ بشوفك بعند تلاتة.

Stacked prepositions created by word-for-word transfer.

✅ بشوفك عالتلاتة قدام السينما.

bshūfak ʿat-tlēte ʾoddēm es-sīnema.

I'll see you at three in front of the cinema.

Leaving عن at the end of a neutral question

❌ شو عم تسأل الموظفة عن؟

English-style stranding; keep عن with the requested topic.

✅ عن شو عم بتسأل الموظفة؟

ʿan shū ʿam btisʾal el-mwaẓẓafe?

What are you asking the employee about?

Key Takeaways

Lebanese prepositions belong to lexical frames and conventional chunks, not English glosses. Distinguish interlocutor مع from topic عن, learn فكر بـ، رد على، اتصل بـ, and preserve their suffix forms. Produce Beirut بـ + full noun / فيـ + pronoun, memorize time expressions whole, and keep prepositions beside مين and شو. When meaning or register changes, label the alternative rather than calling every cross-dialect form impossible.
