English-Style Directness in Requests and Refusals

English speakers are often warned that they sound “too direct” in Arabic. That warning is too crude. Urban Lebanese uses direct imperatives naturally among intimates, in routine tasks, and in emergencies. The problem arises when an English request or refusal is transferred without the relational work the situation needs: no greeting in a new contact, no acknowledgment of effort, no reason for a costly request, or no appreciation before declining an invitation.

Lebanese research on requests does not show a blanket preference for elaborate hints. It finds a strong role for clear conventional questions—especially ability, permission, and willingness frames—alongside direct forms. The practical task is therefore not “always be indirect.” It is: make the intended action clear, choose a shell proportionate to entitlement and cost, and leave the listener a usable way to respond. The full inventory is developed under making requests.

Diagnose the situation before changing the sentence

Ask four questions:

  1. Relationship: intimate, colleague, service worker, or stranger?
  2. Entitlement: is the action already part of the listener's role or a personal favor?
  3. Cost: one second, ten minutes, money, risk, or a schedule change?
  4. Uptake: has the listener accepted, hesitated, or already said no?
💡
Directness is not a property of one word. Grammar, greeting, reason, intonation, timing, and the next turn jointly create the force.

Error clinic 1: issuing a bare command to an unfamiliar person

Over-entitled opening—the speaker assigns two actions to an unfamiliar listener without checking availability.

law samaḥt, fīk tiftaḥle l-bēb w-ana baḥmel eṣ-ṣondūʾ?

Excuse me, could you open the door while I carry the box? (polite request to an unfamiliar man)

The corrected turn names a visible reason and limits the favor. With a close roommate performing a routine task, فتحلي الباب may be entirely ordinary.

Error clinic 2: treating لو سمحت as a magic politeness sticker

Pressuring request—the final phrase does not undo the threat or the refusal of legitimate constraints.

iza waʾtak byismaḥ, fīk tkhalliṣ et-taʾrīr el-lēle? w-iza laʾ mnʾazzhlo la-bokra.

If your time allows, can you finish the report tonight? If not, we'll postpone it until tomorrow. (professional request with an exit)

لو سمحت softens an imperative, but it cannot cancel coercive content. A genuine exit is grammatical and practical evidence that refusal is possible.

Error clinic 3: omitting the opening in a new message

Abrupt first contact—the message begins with an immediate command and unexplained urgency.

marḥaba, yaʿṭīk el-ʿāfye. lamma tifḍa fīk tibʿatle s-siʿer w-el-ʿonwēn?

Hello, hope work is going well. When you're free, could you send me the price and address? (polite first contact to a man)

A greeting does not need to become a long ceremony. It establishes contact before the request and makes لما تفضى credible.

Error clinic 4: hiding a costly request inside a vague complaint

Insufficient request—the listener cannot reliably infer that the speaker wants a shift swap.

I have an important appointment tomorrow. If you can, could you swap the afternoon shift with me? (clear professional request)

This is a case where more explicit is more considerate: the colleague can evaluate the actual cost rather than decode a complaint.

Error clinic 5: refusing the person instead of the proposal

Needlessly relationship-threatening for the intended friendly invitation refusal—the wording foregrounds rejection of visiting the host.

Thanks for the invitation, but I can't come tonight. Shall we meet at the end of the week? (warm refusal plus alternative)

The correction keeps the no intact. Appreciation and an alternative separate tonight's limit from the relationship.

Error clinic 6: turning inability into an accusation

Escalating refusal—the speaker judges the requester instead of stating the practical limit.

b-hal-mohle ma fīne khallṣo, bass bʾdar sallemmak yē l-khamīs.

I can't finish it on this timeline, but I can deliver it to you Thursday. (professional boundary plus alternative)

An alternative is not mandatory when none exists. The essential repair is to locate the limit in time, capacity, or willingness, not in the other person's character.

Error clinic 7: interpreting a clear no as ritual modesty

Coercive uptake—an explicit inability is ignored and food is imposed anyway.

ʾālet ʿanzhad ma fīya tēkol, f-zhāwabta wala yhimmik w-shilt eṣ-ṣaḥen.

She said she genuinely couldn't eat, so I told her not to worry and removed the plate.

One light reoffer can occur in familiar hospitality. Repetition, عنجد, a reason, or moving the item away closes the sequence. Conventional insistence never overrides consent.

Error clinic 8: refusing without giving the other person an answer

Non-answer for the intended scheduling decision—the requester cannot tell whether to wait, plan, or ask someone else.

hal-osbūʿ ma raḥ iʾdar, yaʿne ma tinṭorne. iza tghayyar shī bkhabbirak.

I won't be able to this week, so don't wait for me. If anything changes, I'll tell you. (clear refusal to one man)

Vague delay can be useful while information is genuinely missing. Add a deadline—بردلك خبر قبل المسا—when you mean to decide later.

A grammatical sentence can still choose the wrong interactional voice

hal yumkinuka an tuḥḍira lī qāʾimata ṭ-ṭaʿāmi?

Could you bring me the menu? (grammatical MSA; too ceremonial for the intended ordinary Beirut café exchange)

law samaḥt, fīk tzhīble l-minyō?

Excuse me, could you bring me the menu? (polite colloquial café request)

The first sentence is not bad Arabic. It simply selects a prepared formal voice for a routine local exchange. Politeness does not require switching to MSA.

Intonation can reopen or close the choice

The written shell فيك تساعدني؟ normally leaves response space. A broad rise sounds open; a clipped fall, repeated question, or heavy stress can convey “you had better.” Conversely, a household imperative with warm intonation can be less distant than a highly engineered question.

fīk tsēʿedne b-hal-shaghle iza ʿindak waʾet?

Can you help me with this if you have time? (open request to one man; rising contour)

fīk tsēʿedne walla laʾ?

Can you help me or not? (impatient challenge; relationship and prior delay may justify it)

The second form is useful when an answer is overdue, but it should not be taught as the neutral way to ask.

Repair dialogue: keep the boundary, repair the stance

khalliṣ et-taʾrīr el-yōm, ḍarūre.

Manager: Finish the report today; it's urgent. (direct instruction; potentially abrupt without prior context)

el-yōm ma fīne, ʿinde shoghl tēne.

Employee: I can't today; I have other work. (clear but compressed refusal)

maʿak ḥaʾʾ, ma waḍḍaḥtellak es-sabab. ez-zabūn nāṭro ʿal-khamse; shū fīna nʾazzhel la-nilḥaʾo?

Manager: You're right; I didn't explain why. The client expects it at five. What can we postpone so we can make it? (repair through reason and joint planning)

iza mnʾazzhel el-zhadwal la-bokra, fīne khalliṣ et-taʾrīr ʾabel el-khamse.

Employee: If we postpone the spreadsheet until tomorrow, I can finish the report before five. (negotiated acceptance)

The repair does not add empty politeness. It supplies the missing reason, recognizes competing obligations, and invites a workable solution.

💡
When a turn lands badly, use قصدي or ما وضحتلك and name the action, reason, or limit. Repeating the same command more slowly only intensifies it.

Common Mistakes

Making every imperative taboo

Bad diagnosis—extra wording would delay an urgent warning.

dīr bālak, fī mōtōsīkl zhēye!

Watch out, a motorcycle is coming! (urgent direct warning to a man)

Believing longer always means kinder

Overloaded request—the stacked mitigators obscure the action and sound evasive.

iza ʿindak waʾet, fīk tsēʿedne ʿashar dʾāyeʾ?

If you have time, can you help me for ten minutes? (clear bounded request)

Giving an invented excuse

Faulty strategy—courtesy does not require a fabricated constraint.

bfaḍḍel ma shērek hal-marra, bass ysalmo innak saʾaltne.

I'd prefer not to participate this time, but thanks for asking me. (honest softened preference)

Continuing after a final refusal

Boundary violation—repetition strengthens the refusal rather than reopening it.

He said he couldn't, so I said I understood and would ask someone else.

Key Takeaways

Use imperatives where entitlement, intimacy, routine, or urgency supports them. For unfamiliar people and costly favors, فيك...؟ ؟, a concise reason, and a real exit usually work better than either a bare command or an opaque hint. In refusals, state the limit clearly and preserve the relationship when it matters. Above all, treat the listener's no as uptake, not as the beginning of a ritual you are entitled to win.
