Questions & Answers about ข้าวสาร กิโลกรัม ละ เท่าไร คะ
Why is the word order กิโลกรัม ละ เท่าไร instead of "how much per kilogram"?
In Thai, the structure for "per [unit]" is Unit + ละ (per) + Price or Amount. So, instead of saying "how much per kilogram", you literally say "kilogram per how much": กิโลกรัม + ละ + เท่าไร.
What is the difference between ข้าว and ข้าวสาร?
ข้าว is the general word for rice or food, and usually refers to cooked rice when used on its own. ข้าวสาร specifically means uncooked, raw rice (the dry grains you buy in a bag at the store to cook at home).
Could I use กี่ instead of เท่าไร in this sentence?
No, because you are asking for a price. เท่าไร means "how much" and is used for prices, uncountable amounts, and measurements. กี่ means "how many" and is only used with classifiers for countable things (like asking "how many kilograms do you want?").
Do Thai people really say the full word กิโลกรัม when asking for prices at the market?
They can, but in everyday shopping, people usually shorten กิโลกรัม to just กิโล. You will very often hear กิโลละเท่าไร when buying produce!
