Why is ได้ (dai) placed after "doctor" instead of before the verb like in English?
In Thai, when you use ได้ to say you can do something, it must come after the action and its object. You don't say "I can call the doctor" like in English; you use the order "I call the doctor can" (ฉัน โทร หา หมอ ได้). Adding the question word ไหม at the end turns it into "Can I call the doctor?".
I previously learned that หา (ha) means "to look for". Why is it used here?
While หา often means "to look for", it is also used as a connecting word meaning "to" or "towards" a person. In Thai, to say you are phoning someone, you use the phrase โทรหา (tho ha), which literally means "call towards". You will see หา used this way with visiting or going to see someone as well.
Can I just use ไหม (mai) by itself to ask if I can call the doctor?
If you just ask ฉัน โทร หา หมอ ไหม, it means "Am I calling the doctor?" or "Do I call the doctor?". To specifically ask if you can or may call them, you need to include the word for capability or permission, which is ได้. Together at the end of the sentence, ได้ไหม means "Can I...?" or "Is it okay if I...?".
Why does the sentence end with คะ (kha) instead of ค่ะ (kha)?
Female speakers use คะ (pronounced with a high tone) at the end of questions. You use ค่ะ (with a falling tone) when you are making a statement or answering. Because this sentence asks a question using ไหม, คะ is the correct polite particle to use here.
