Questions & Answers about สบายดี ครับ
The translation says 'Yes, I am well,' but there is no word for 'yes' here. Why?
In Thai, you don't usually use a direct word for 'yes' to answer a yes/no question. Instead, you echo the main verb or adjective from the question. If someone asked สบายดีไหม (Are you well?), you answer by simply repeating สบายดี to mean 'Yes, I am.'
Where is the pronoun for 'I' in this sentence?
Based on this lesson, we use ไม่ to answer 'no.' Would 'No, I am not well' be ไม่สบายดี?
Close! To answer 'no,' you do place ไม่ (not) before the verb. However, when saying you aren't feeling well, Thai speakers naturally drop the ดี (good). The correct way to say 'No, I am not well' (or 'I am sick') is just ไม่สบาย.
Why does the English translation specify '(polite, male)'?
Because of the word ครับ at the end. This is a polite particle used exclusively by male speakers to make the sentence respectful. A female speaker answering the exact same way would change that word and say สบายดี ค่ะ instead.
