Questions & Answers about นั่น นก ค่ะ
Why is there no word for "is" or "a" in this sentence?
In Thai, the word นั่น (that) often acts as "that is" all by itself when pointing something out. Additionally, Thai doesn't use articles like "a" or "the". So, นั่น นก translates directly to "That bird", which is understood completely as "That is a bird."
What does ค่ะ do at the end of the sentence?
ค่ะ is a politeness particle used by female speakers. It doesn't have a direct English translation, but adding it to the end of a statement makes you sound respectful and polite to the listener.
How would I say this if I am a male speaker?
You would simply replace the female particle ค่ะ with the male polite particle ครับ. The sentence becomes นั่น นก ครับ.
If the bird was right next to me, would I still use นั่น?
No, นั่น means "that" and is used for things a little further away from you. If the bird was right next to you, you would use นี่ (this) instead, making the sentence นี่ นก ค่ะ (This is a bird).
