Questions & Answers about วัด หลวง อยู่ กลาง เมือง
Why is there no preposition like ที่ (at) before กลาง (middle) in this sentence?
In Thai, spatial relationship words like กลาง (middle), หน้า (front), or หลัง (back) can attach directly to the verb อยู่ (to be located) without needing ที่. Saying อยู่ที่กลางเมือง is also perfectly correct, but dropping ที่ makes it flow more naturally in everyday speech.
Since a temple is a permanent structure, shouldn't we use ตั้งอยู่ (is situated) instead of just อยู่?
You can definitely use ตั้งอยู่ in formal contexts, such as a guidebook or an official presentation. However, conversational Thai heavily favors efficiency; native speakers usually default to the simpler อยู่ even for massive, permanent landmarks like a royal temple.
The word หลวง translates to "royal" here. Does it always mean "royal" when modifying a noun?
Not always. While it often refers to royalty, it is also widely used to mean "public" or "state-owned," such as in ถนนหลวง (highway or public road). Historically, it also meant "great" or "big," which is why you still see it in the names of large mountains or older landmarks.
Could I say ใจกลางเมือง instead of just กลางเมือง?
