Expressing 'when' (ตอนที่)

When reminiscing about childhood or explaining the timing of past events, Thai uses the conjunction ตอนที่ (when / at the time that).

Expressing "When"

Start the time clause with ตอนที่ to establish when an event happened. This structure is frequently used to describe what you were like as a child using adjectives like ซน (naughty) or ดื้อ (stubborn).

ตอนที่ + [Situation/Time Clause], [Main Event/Action]

Talking About School Days

Combine ตอนที่ with school levels—such as อนุบาล (kindergarten), ประถม (primary school), and มัธยม (high school)—to specify a period in your youth. You can introduce these periods using the verbs อยู่ (to be at) or เรียน (to study).

Contrasting Past and Present

When telling stories, contrast a ตอนที่ clause with ตอนนี้ (now) to highlight how things have changed as you've grown up (โต). You can also add เมื่อก่อน (in the past) for extra emphasis.

Sharing Memories

You can treat the entire ตอนที่ clause like a noun phrase meaning "the time when." This pairs perfectly with verbs of memory and storytelling, such as จำ (to remember), เล่า (to tell a story), and คิดถึง (to miss).
