Questions & Answers about Länge leve brudparet!
Why is the verb leve instead of the present tense lever?
This is the optative mood (sometimes called the present subjunctive), which is used in formal, fixed expressions to express a wish, hope, or blessing. Instead of stating a fact like lever does ("they are living"), leve expresses a desire: "may they live."
How is this special leve form created?
You form the optative by taking the verb stem (which is the same as the imperative command form) and adding -e. For the verb leva (to live), the stem is lev, so adding -e gives us leve. Because this mood is mostly dead in modern Swedish, you just need to memorize it as part of fixed phrases rather than learning how to conjugate every verb this way.
Why is the subject brudparet placed after the verb here?
Why doesn't Swedish use an adjective for "bridal" in brudparet?
Swedish relies heavily on compound nouns. Instead of using an adjective like English does ("bridal couple"), Swedish glues two nouns together: en brud (a bride) and ett par (a couple). Because par is an ett-word, the entire compound noun takes the definite neuter suffix -et to become brudparet (the bridal couple).
