The "As... As Possible" Structure
To express doing something to its absolute limit—like driving "as fast as possible"—Swedish uses a simple formula:
så + [adjective or adverb] + som möjligt
- så = as / so
- som möjligt = as possible
Use this with adverbs of speed like fort (fast) or snabbt (quickly):
| The driver wants to drive as fast as possible. | Föraren vill köra så fort som möjligt. |
| He cycled the lap as quickly as possible. | Han cyklade varvet så snabbt som möjligt. |
Frequency and Degree
You can easily swap out the adjective or adverb to describe the frequency or physical intensity of an action:
| We compete on the race track as often as possible. | Vi tävlar på racerbanan så ofta som möjligt. |
| I hold the steering wheel as tightly as possible. | Jag håller ratten så hårt som möjligt. |
| We must accelerate as much as possible! | Vi måste gasa så mycket som möjligt! |
Spatial and Temporal Limits
This structure also works for pushing space and time to their limits. Notice how an object (motståndaren) can sit directly between the adjective phrase and som möjligt:
| The car drives as close to the opponent as possible. | Bilen kör så nära motståndaren som möjligt. |
| We turn in the curve as late as possible. | Vi svänger i kurvan så sent som möjligt. |
