Singular adjectives (stor, stort)

Adjectives with En-Words

When you use an adjective to describe a noun, it needs to agree with that noun's gender. If you are describing an en-word (like bilen or boken), the adjective stays in its base form.

The car is big.
Bilen är stor.
The book is heavy.
Boken är tung.

Adjectives with Ett-Words

If you are describing an ett-word (like huset or bordet), you must add a -t to the end of the adjective.

For example, stor (big) becomes stort, and tung (heavy) becomes tungt.

The house is big and very nice.
Huset är stort och mycket fint.
The table is heavy.
Bordet är tungt.

Describing "It"

When you use det as an abstract "it" to describe a general situation or the weather (like "It is cold!"), the adjective also takes the -t ending. This is because the pronoun det acts exactly like an ett-word.

It is cold here!
Det är kallt här!
We play football and it is very fun.
Vi spelar fotboll och det är mycket roligt.
