The Past Perfect (hade + supinum)
The past perfect describes an action that was completed before another event in the past. It is formed just like its English equivalent: use hade (had) followed by the supinum form of the verb.
| I had forgotten the wallet at home. | Jag hade glömt plånboken hemma. |
As with the present perfect, sentence adverbs like inte (not) or redan (already) come directly after hade in a main clause.
| We had not locked the door yesterday. | Vi hade inte låst dörren igår. |
| The boss had already changed the plan. | Chefen hade redan ändrat planen. |
Connecting Past Events
The past perfect is often combined with the simple past to clarify the sequence of events. This is especially useful when describing unexpected changes or realizing a mistake. Use conjunctions like att (that), därför att (because), or innan (before) to link these events.
| I realized that I had made a mistake. | Jag insåg att jag hade gjort ett misstag. |
| He missed the train because he had overslept. | Han missade tåget därför att han hade försovit sig. |
| We had cancelled the booking before we realized the mistake. | Vi hade ställt in bokningen innan vi insåg misstaget. |
The action with hade always happens first chronologically, even if it appears later in the sentence.
| I changed the plan because he had missed the meeting. | Jag ändrade planen därför att han hade missat mötet. |
