Questions & Answers about Вечеринка пятнадцатого мая.
Why isn't there a preposition like "on" or "in" before the date?
To say on what date something happens in Russian, you don't use a preposition. Instead, you just put both the ordinal number (fifteenth) and the month (May) into the Genitive case.
Why does пятнадцатого have the neuter Genitive ending -ого?
It is agreeing with the neuter noun число (date or number). In Russian, we usually leave out the word число when stating dates, but the ordinal number still keeps the neuter ending as if the word were still there: пятнадцатого (числа) мая.
Why is the letter "г" in пятнадцатого pronounced like a "в"?
The Genitive endings -ого and -его for masculine and neuter adjectives and ordinal numbers are always pronounced with a "в" sound. So, it sounds like "пятнадцатава".
Where is the verb "is" in this sentence?
Just like you learned early on, Russian drops the verb "to be" in the present tense. English needs "The party IS...", but Russian simply puts the subject and the date together: Вечеринка пятнадцатого мая.
