Questions & Answers about Виза в паспорте.
Where is the word for 'is' in this sentence?
In Russian, the verb 'to be' is almost never used in the present tense. You simply put the subject (виза) and its location (в паспорте) together. Literally, this sentence says 'Visa in passport.'
Why does паспорт end with an -е here (паспорте)?
Because it is answering the question 'where?' using the preposition в (in). In Russian, showing a location like this requires a special word form called the Prepositional case. For most masculine words like паспорт, you form it by adding an -е to the end.
How do I pronounce the preposition в before паспорте?
Because the next letter, п, is a voiceless sound (made without using your vocal cords), the в changes its sound to match it. It sounds like an English 'f' instead of a 'v'. You should pronounce the two words smoothly together as if they were one word.
How do we know it translates to 'The visa' and not 'A visa'?
Russian does not have articles like 'the' or 'a'. You rely entirely on the context of the conversation to figure it out. Since we are usually talking about a specific visa placed inside a specific passport, 'The visa' makes the most sense in English.
