Strong negation (далеко не, вовсе не)

Emphatic Negation

Sometimes a simple не (not) isn't strong enough. When you need to strongly disagree, debunk an assumption, or explain that a magic trick isn't what it seems, Russian uses emphatic negation intensifiers.

These words are placed immediately before не to mean "far from," "not at all," or "by no means."

Далеко не (Far from)

To say that something is "far from" being what people think, use далеко не.

Вовсе не (Not at all)

To strongly contradict an assumption and say "not at all," use вовсе не. It is very commonly used when contrasting a false belief with the real truth (often followed by а, meaning "but rather").

His trick is not a miracle at all, but sleight of hand.
Его трюк — это вовсе не чудо, а ловкость рук.
This is not magic at all, the magician is simply distracting attention.
Это вовсе не магия, фокусник просто отвлекает внимание.

Отнюдь не (By no means)

For a slightly more formal or expressive way to say "by no means" or "not in the slightest," use отнюдь не.

This is by no means mysticism, the secret is much simpler!
Это отнюдь не мистика, секрет намного проще!

Debunking Illusions

When exposing how an illusion actually works, you will often need vocabulary for deception and distraction.
