Advanced Case Government: Possession and Control
While the Instrumental case often expresses the tool used to do something, it is also essential in business and leadership. Specifically, verbs for managing, ruling, or possessing require their object to be in the Instrumental case.
Abstract Possession
To talk about possessing an abstract quality like a talent (талант) or a gift (дар), use the verb обладать. The quality possessed takes the Instrumental case (талантом, даром).
Being in Charge
When you head a department, manage a domain, or direct resources, the domain you control takes the Instrumental case.
- Use заведовать for being in charge of a sector or business, like finances (финансами).
- Use распоряжаться for managing, directing, or making decisions about resources, like capital (капиталом).
Ruling and Managing
The verb управлять means to manage, govern, or rule. Whether you are running a modern corporation (корпорацией) or ruling an entire empire (империей), the entity being managed takes the Instrumental case.
Contrast: Regular Direct Objects
This rule only applies to specific verbs of control and possession. Standard actions—such as valuing, keeping, or changing—still take normal direct objects in the Accusative case.
For example, concepts like leadership (лидерство) and strategy (стратегия) stay in the Accusative when they are the direct receiver of an action like "we value."
