Direct objects (-у, -ю)

Direct Objects

In English, nouns usually stay the same whether they are doing an action or receiving it. In Russian, when a noun is the direct receiver of an action (like a newspaper in "I am buying a newspaper"), it takes the accusative case.

For inanimate (non-living) feminine nouns, the endings change:

  • changes to
  • changes to
I am buying a newspaper in the store.
Я покупаю газету в магазине.
Dad is sitting on the sofa and reading a book.
Папа сидит на диване и читает книгу.
My brother is reading an article.
Мой брат читает статью.

Everyday Actions

You will use the accusative case constantly with common verbs. Watch how the feminine objects in these sentences shift to end in or .

I understand the problem.
Я понимаю проблему.
The student is listening to the lecture carefully.
Студент внимательно слушает лекцию.

Masculine and Neuter Nouns

Inanimate masculine and neuter nouns are simple: they do not change in the accusative case. They look exactly like their standard dictionary forms.

In the evening we watch a film.
Вечером мы смотрим фильм.

Multiple Actions

When a sentence describes multiple actions, simply apply the accusative case rule to every feminine direct object.

Mom is preparing food, and dad is studying the map.
Мама готовит еду, а папа изучает карту.
I am reading a newspaper and looking at a photograph.
Я читаю газету и смотрю фотографию.
