Three Verbs You Already Half-Know
You have met vejo, venho, dou and dá inside sentences. Here are their full families — three of the most-used irregular verbs in the language.
Ver (to see):
| eu | vejo |
| tu | vês |
| ele / ela / você | vê |
| nós | vemos |
| eles / elas / vocês | veem |
Veem has no accent — the 1990 spelling agreement removed it.
| I watch a movie at night. | Vejo um filme à noite. |
| Do you see the problem? — I do. | Vês o problema? — Vejo. |
| I do not see anything. | Não vejo nada. |
Vir (to come) — the mirror of ir; where you GO with vou, you COME with venho:
| eu | venho |
| tu | vens |
| ele / ela / você | vem |
| nós | vimos |
| eles / elas / vocês | vêm |
Watch the accents: ele vem but eles vêm — the same singular/plural trick as tem/têm.
| I come from school at six. | Venho da escola às seis. |
| They come by train. | Eles vêm de comboio. |
| Are you coming to the party on Saturday? — I am. | Vens à festa no sábado? — Venho. |
Dar (to give):
| eu | dou |
| tu | dás |
| ele / ela / você | dá |
| nós | damos |
| eles / elas / vocês | dão |
| I give a gift to my mother. | Dou um presente à minha mãe. |
| She gives the book to the student. | Ela dá o livro ao aluno. |
