Questions & Answers about Kontroler koordynuje manewry, podczas gdy samoloty lądują.
Could I just say podczas samoloty lądują?
No. Podczas is a preposition meaning "during" and must be followed by a noun, usually in the genitive case (for example, podczas lądowania - during the landing). Because we have a full clause here with its own subject and verb (samoloty lądują), you must use the conjunction podczas gdy (while).
Notice how both verbs (koordynuje and lądują) are imperfective. Is this expected with podczas gdy?
Yes, when podczas gdy is used in a temporal sense to mean "while", it typically connects two ongoing, simultaneous actions. Because the actions are continuous and happening at the same time, imperfective verbs are the natural choice for both parts of the sentence.
Manewry and samoloty both end in -y. Are they in the same case?
They look identical but are in different cases! Samoloty is the subject of the second clause, so it is in the nominative case. Manewry is the direct object of koordynuje, so it is in the accusative case. For plural inanimate nouns, the nominative and accusative forms are exactly the same.
Do I always need a comma before podczas gdy?
Yes. In Polish, you must place a comma before a conjunction that introduces a subordinate clause. Since podczas gdy introduces a new clause with its own verb (lądują), the comma before it is mandatory.
Does podczas gdy only refer to time, or can it be used for contrast?
While it is used for time here, podczas gdy is also the standard way to express "whereas" in Polish. You will often see it used to contrast two facts, such as: On lubi psy, podczas gdy ona woli koty (He likes dogs, whereas she prefers cats).
