Expressing Purpose with "Żeby"
To explain why you are performing an action (meaning "in order to" or simply "to"), use the conjunction żeby followed by an infinitive verb.
Notice that in Polish, you must always place a comma immediately before żeby.
| I must download a new app to check the weather. | Muszę pobrać nową aplikację, żeby sprawdzić pogodę. |
| You must click this button to open the file. | Musisz kliknąć ten przycisk, żeby otworzyć plik. |
Troubleshooting and Tech Actions
When dealing with software and devices, you will frequently use verbs like zaktualizować (to update), zainstalować (to install), and zrestartować (to restart) to explain your troubleshooting steps.
| We restarted the computer to install these programs. | Zrestartowaliśmy komputer, żeby zainstalować te programy. |
| If your laptop is slow, you must update the system to finish the project. | Jeśli twój laptop działa wolno, musisz zaktualizować system, żeby skończyć projekt. |
Asking About Purpose
You can easily form questions to find out the reason behind a technical action by keeping the exact same żeby + infinitive structure.
| Did he restart the system to fix this error? | Czy on zrestartował system, żeby naprawić ten błąd? |
| What apps did you install to read in Polish? | Jakie aplikacje zainstalowałeś, żeby czytać po polsku? |
