Moving House: Counting with "Ne"
Moving house (il trasloco) involves a lot of packing, sorting, and counting.
| We are preparing the move and we bought many large boxes. | Stiamo preparando il trasloco e abbiamo comprato molti scatoloni. |
Past Participle Agreement with "Ne"
You already know that the partitive pronoun ne can be used to say "some" or "of them" when specifying a quantity.
Usually, in the passato prossimo, verbs that use the auxiliary avere do not change their past participle endings. However, when you use ne to express a quantity, a special rule applies: the past participle must agree in gender and number with the noun that ne is replacing.
For example, if you are talking about i bicchieri (masculine plural) and you pack twenty of them, the participle imballato changes its ending to -i (imballati):
| The glasses are fragile. I packed twenty of them. | I bicchieri sono fragili. Ne ho imballati venti. |
If you are replacing a feminine plural noun like le scatole, the participle must end in -e (riempite):
| The boxes are small, but we filled forty of them. | Le scatole sono piccole, ma ne abbiamo riempite quaranta. |
Agreement in Context
Whether you are filling boxes, writing labels, or emptying vans, always remember to match the end of your verb to the noun hiding behind ne.
| I bought many labels and I wrote ten of them. | Ho comprato molte etichette e ne ho scritte dieci. |
| How many large boxes for the attic did you pack? I packed two of them. | Quanti scatoloni per la soffitta ha imballato? Ne ho imballati due. |
