Connecting Verbs with "di"
Some Italian verbs require the preposition di to connect to a following infinitive.
Decidere di (to decide to)
| The director decides to change the script. | Il regista decide di cambiare il copione. |
Memory verbs: Ricordare and Dimenticare
Verbs dealing with memory—such as remembering (ricordare) or forgetting (dimenticare)—link to the next verb using di.
| The actress remembers to study the script. | L'attrice ricorda di studiare il copione. |
| The actress forgets to say the line. | L'attrice dimentica di dire la battuta. |
Finishing and Stopping: Finire and Smettere
Verbs of finishing or quitting, like finire (to finish) and smettere (to stop), also require di before the infinitive.
| We finish preparing the scene. | Finiamo di preparare la scena. |
| The director stops shouting. | Il regista smette di gridare. |
As you direct the set, remember to keep di between your conjugated verb and the infinitive!
| The director decides to interrupt the action. | Il regista decide di interrompere l'azione. |
