Modern Feminine Professional Titles
Historically, high-level professions in politics, medicine, and law used masculine titles for everyone. Modern Italian uses feminine forms for women in these roles.
The rules are straightforward. Most titles simply change their final -o or -e to -a:
- il ministro → la ministra
- l'assessore → l'assessora
- il cancelliere → la cancelliera
| The mayor (f.) didn't take offense at the minister (f.). | La sindaca non se l'è presa con la ministra. |
| The minister (f.) met the local councillor (f.) today. | La ministra ha incontrato l'assessora oggi. |
| This MP (f.) is also a good magistrate (f.). | Questa deputata è anche una brava magistrata. |
Leadership in Medicine and Administration
This modernization applies across all sectors, from the operating room to police headquarters. Notice how titles like chirurgo (surgeon), questore (police commissioner), and pioniere (pioneer) shift naturally to their feminine forms:
| The new surgeon (f.) is the head physician (f.) of the department. | La nuova chirurga è la primaria del reparto. |
| That surgeon (f.) is a true pioneer (f.). | Quella chirurga è una vera pioniera. |
| The chancellor (f.) spoke with the prefect (f.). | La cancelliera ha parlato con la prefetta. |
| The decision was made by the prefect (f.) and the police commissioner (f.). | La decisione è stata presa dalla prefetta e dalla questora. |
