Learn Hardcore Ukrainian: Дорога до міста довга.

In Ukrainian, the present tense of the verb "to be" is typically omitted. The sentence functions as an equative construction where the linking verb is implied. Thus, "Дорога до міста довга" literally means "The road to the city (is) long."

What case is used for "міста" and why?

The word міста is in the genitive singular form. It follows the preposition до, which requires the genitive case to indicate direction or destination. This construction shows that the road leads "to the city."

How does the adjective довга agree with the noun дорога?

The adjective довга agrees with дорога in gender, number, and case. Since дорога is a feminine noun in the nominative singular, довга is also in the feminine nominative singular form. The ending -а on довга reflects this agreement, which is a key feature in Ukrainian adjective–noun relationships.

Why is the adjective placed after the noun in this sentence, unlike in English where adjectives usually come before nouns?

Ukrainian allows more flexibility in word order than English. In the sentence "Дорога до міста довга," the adjective довга appears after the subject to form a predicate adjective that describes the subject. This construction is typical in Ukrainian equative sentences, where the descriptive word following the subject serves as the predicate. Although adjectives can sometimes precede nouns in Ukrainian, in predicate constructions the adjective usually comes after the noun or noun phrase.
