Why is the verb जा रही है and not just जा है?
Hindi usually forms the present progressive with:
main verb stem + रहा / रही / रहे + है / हैं
So:
- जा = go
- रही = progressive part, agreeing with a feminine singular subject
- है = is
So जा रही है means is going.
You cannot normally say जा है for is going.
Why is it रही and not रहा?
Because बस is a feminine singular noun in Hindi.
In the present progressive, the रहा / रही / रहे part agrees with the subject:
- masculine singular: रहा
- feminine singular: रही
- plural: रहे
So:
- लड़का जा रहा है = the boy is going
- लड़की जा रही है = the girl is going
- बस जा रही है = the bus is going
That is why रही is used here.
What does की ओर mean?
की ओर means toward or in the direction of.
So:
- = toward the city
