Questions & Answers about मेरे पास सीखने का अवसर है।
Why does Hindi use मेरे पास for I have?
Hindi usually does not use a verb equivalent to English have in simple possession sentences.
So instead of saying I have X, Hindi often says:
- मेरे पास X है = With me / near me, there is X
In this sentence:
- मेरे पास = with me
- अवसर है = there is an opportunity
So the whole structure literally feels like:
- With me, an opportunity to learn exists
This is one of the most common Hindi patterns for possession.
Why is it मेरे and not मैं or मेरा?
Because पास is a postposition, and pronouns change form before postpositions.
The pronoun मैं changes to its oblique form मेरे before postpositions like:
- मेरे पास = with me
- मेरे लिए = for me
- मेरे साथ = with me
So:
- मैं = I
- मेरे = oblique form used before a postposition
It is not the same as possessive मेरा here.
You should think of मेरे पास as a fixed grammatical pattern meaning with me / in my possession.
What does पास mean here?
पास literally means something like near or close by, but in expressions like मेरे पास, it often means with in the sense of in one’s possession.
Examples:
- मेरे पास किताब है। = I have a book.
- उसके पास समय नहीं है। = He/She does not have time.
So in this sentence, मेरे पास does not mean physical closeness only. It means I have access to / I possess the opportunity.
What does सीखने का mean?
सीखने का is built from the verb सीखना = to learn.
Here is the breakdown:
- सीखना = to learn
- सीखने = oblique form of the infinitive/verbal noun
- सीखने का अवसर = opportunity to learn
A helpful way to understand it is:
- सीखने का अवसर = the opportunity of learning / opportunity to learn
This is a very common Hindi pattern:
- करने का समय = time to do
- जाने का मौका = chance to go
- खाने की जगह = place to eat
So सीखने का is functioning like to learn / for learning before the noun अवसर.
Why is it का and not की or के?
Because का / की / के agrees with the noun that follows it, and here that noun is अवसर.
- अवसर is masculine singular
- so the correct form is का
Compare:
- सीखने का अवसर = opportunity to learn
(अवसर = masculine singular) - सीखने की इच्छा = desire to learn
(इच्छा = feminine singular) - सीखने के अवसर = opportunities to learn
(अवसर = plural)
So the form changes according to the noun after it, not according to सीखने.
What exactly is अवसर? Is it a common word?
अवसर means opportunity or occasion. It is correct and natural, but it sounds a bit formal or bookish.
In everyday Hindi, many speakers more often use:
- मौका = chance, opportunity
So these are both natural:
- मेरे पास सीखने का अवसर है।
- मेरे पास सीखने का मौका है।
The first sounds a little more formal.
The second often sounds more conversational.
Why is है needed at the end?
है is the present-tense form of to be. In this kind of sentence, it shows that the opportunity exists or is present.
So:
- मेरे पास सीखने का अवसर है। = I have an opportunity to learn.
- मेरे पास सीखने का अवसर नहीं है। = I do not have an opportunity to learn.
Without है, the sentence would usually sound incomplete in standard Hindi.
Why is the verb at the end?
Because Hindi normally follows SOV-style word order, and the main verb or copula usually comes at the end of the clause.
Here the order is:
- मेरे पास = with me
- सीखने का अवसर = opportunity to learn
- है = is
So Hindi puts the existence/being part at the end.
This end position is very normal in Hindi and is one of the first word-order patterns English speakers need to get used to.
Why is there no word for a or the?
Hindi does not normally use articles like English a, an, and the.
So:
- अवसर can mean an opportunity or the opportunity
- the exact meaning depends on context
That is why मेरे पास सीखने का अवसर है can be translated as either:
- I have an opportunity to learn
- I have the opportunity to learn
English must choose an article, but Hindi usually does not mark that directly.
Could I also say मुझे सीखने का अवसर है?
It is understandable, but मेरे पास सीखने का अवसर है is more natural for the plain idea of I have an opportunity to learn.
Hindi often uses different structures for slightly different meanings:
- मेरे पास सीखने का अवसर है = I have an opportunity to learn
- मुझे सीखने का अवसर मिला है = I have received an opportunity to learn
- मेरे लिए सीखने का अवसर है = There is an opportunity for me to learn
So मुझे ... है is not usually the best choice here unless the rest of the sentence is built differently.
How would I negate this sentence?
Just add नहीं before है:
- मेरे पास सीखने का अवसर नहीं है। = I do not have an opportunity to learn.
This is the normal position for negation in a sentence like this.
Pattern:
- मेरे पास X है = I have X
- मेरे पास X नहीं है = I do not have X
How would this change in the past or future?
You mainly change है:
मेरे पास सीखने का अवसर था।
= I had an opportunity to learn.मेरे पास सीखने का अवसर होगा।
= I will have an opportunity to learn.
So the basic structure stays the same:
- मेरे पास
- thing possessed + form of to be
This makes the pattern easy to reuse with different tenses.
