How would I pronounce الشرطة وصلت in Levantine?

A common rough pronunciation is ish-shurṭa waṣlet.

You may hear small regional differences, like esh-shorṭa woṣlet, but the two big things to notice are:

الـ before ش is not pronounced as a clear al-
وصلت ends with a feminine singular past ending

So for a beginner, ish-shurṭa waṣlet is a good approximation.

Why is وصلت feminine singular when the police sounds plural in English?

Because الشرطة is treated as a grammatically singular feminine collective noun in Arabic.

So Arabic is thinking of it more like the police force or the police institution as one unit. That is why the verb is وصلت = she/it arrived, not a plural verb.

This is one of those places where Arabic and English organize the idea differently:

English: The police have arrived
Arabic: الشرطة وصلت = literally closer to The police force arrived

What does الـ mean here, and why doesn’t it sound like al-?

الـ is the definite article, meaning the.

But in pronunciation, when الـ comes before certain letters called sun letters, the l sound assimilates. is one of those letters.

pronounced: roughly ish-shurṭa or esh-shurṭa
not usually: al-shurṭa

The spelling stays the same, but the pronunciation changes.

What does the -ت at the end of وصلت mean?

In this sentence, -ت marks the verb as past tense, feminine singular.

So وصلت means she arrived or it arrived. Here it agrees with الشرطة, which is grammatically feminine singular.

That is why the sentence is not الشرطة وصل and not a plural form either.

Can I also say وصلت الشرطة instead of الشرطة وصلت?

Yes. Both are possible.

The difference is mostly one of style and focus:

الشرطة وصلت = subject first; very natural in speech, especially if you are talking about the police
وصلت الشرطة = verb first; also correct, and can sound a bit more narrative or report-like

In spoken Levantine, subject-first order is very common, so الشرطة وصلت sounds perfectly natural.

Is this sentence specifically Levantine, or is it also Standard Arabic?

The spelling works for both.

That is very common with short, simple sentences: the written form may look the same, while the pronunciation is what makes it clearly Levantine.

So:

in Standard Arabic, the pronunciation would be more like ash-shurṭa waṣalat
in Levantine, you would hear something more like ish-shurṭa waṣlet

In other words, the script can be shared, but the spoken form changes.

What exactly does الشرطة mean here: the police force, or the police officers?

It can mean either, depending on context.

Most basically, الشرطة means the police as an institution or body. But in real use, it can also refer to the police officers as a group.

So in a sentence like الشرطة وصلت, it could mean:

the police force arrived
the police officers arrived

Arabic uses the same word, and context tells you how specific it is.

What is special about the final ة in شرطة?
