Questions & Answers about الباب حديد.
In Egyptian Arabic, it is usually pronounced:
el-bāb ḥadīd
- ال is commonly pronounced el- in Egyptian, not al-
- باب = bāb = door
- حديد = ḥadīd = iron / metal
The sound ḥ in ḥadīd is stronger and deeper than the normal English h.
Because Arabic often leaves out is / am / are in the present tense.
So:
- الباب حديد literally looks like the door iron
- but it means The door is iron or more naturally The door is made of iron
This is very normal in Arabic.
If you want the past or future, Arabic usually does use extra words.
The most natural meaning is:
- The door is iron
- or better in natural English: The door is made of iron
- in many situations: The door is metal
English usually prefers made of here, even though Arabic often just says the material directly.
