Questions & Answers about Viel Spaß!

English says 'Have fun!' Where is the verb 'have' in the German sentence?
In German, you do not need a verb here. While you could technically say Hab viel Spaß! (Have a lot of fun!), Germans almost always shorten it to just Viel Spaß! (literally: much fun). It works perfectly on its own as an everyday friendly wish.
Why is it Viel and not Viele?
Viel means much and is used for uncountable things, like Spaß (fun), time, or water. Viele means many and is used for things you can count, like apples or cars. Since you cannot count fun, we use viel.
Why is Spaß capitalized?
In German, all nouns (words for people, places, things, or concepts) are capitalized. Since Spaß is a concept, it is a noun and must always start with a capital letter.
What is the special letter ß at the end of Spaß?
That letter is called an Eszett or sharp S. It sounds exactly like the s sound in the English word snake. It also tells you to pronounce the vowel before it nice and long.
