Questions & Answers about Wem gehört der Hund?
Why does the sentence start with Wem instead of Wer?
Wer means "who" and is used for the subject (the doer of the action). Wem is the dative version, meaning "to whom". Because we are asking "To whom does the dog belong?", we must use the dative question word Wem.
Why do we use the dative case here?
The verb gehören (to belong to) is a special verb that always requires its object to be in the dative case. The person who owns the object is the receiver of the action, so they take the dative form.
Is der Hund the subject of this sentence?
Yes! In German, the thing that belongs to someone is the subject (in the nominative case). Literally, the sentence translates to "To whom belongs the dog?" Because Hund is a masculine noun acting as the subject, it uses the regular nominative article der.
If der Hund is the subject, why is it at the end of the sentence?
In German open questions, the question word (Wem) always comes first, followed immediately by the verb (gehört in position 2). The subject (der Hund) simply takes the next available spot right after the verb.
