Quantities and materials

Welcome to the mystical apothecary. To brew potions, you need to know how to ask for exact quantities of magical ingredients. Let's look at how to say "a pinch of ash" or "a drop of potion" in German.

Partitive Apposition: Basic Quantities

In English, we connect a quantity and a material with the word "of" (for example, "a gram of herb").

When you talk about a general, unmodified material in German, you do not use a word for "of". Instead, you simply place the quantity noun and the material noun right next to each other. This grammatical structure is called an apposition.

I need one gram of herb to brew the magic potion.
Ich brauche ein Gramm Kraut, um den Zaubertrank zu brauen.
The expert buys a vessel of poison.
Der Experte kauft ein Gefäß Gift.
They mix a glass of sand with the ash.
Sie mischen ein Glas Sand mit der Asche.

The Partitive Genitive: Specific or Modified Materials

If the material is not just a general substance, but has a descriptive word attached to it—such as a definite article, a demonstrative (dieser), or an adjective—German switches to the Genitive case.

The genitive case takes over the job of showing "of the" or "of this". Notice how masculine and neuter material nouns will add an -s or -es to their endings.

A drop of the magic potion heals the wound.
Ein Tropfen des Zaubertranks heilt die Wunde.
A pinch of this magical herb quickly becomes dangerous.
Eine Prise dieses magischen Krautes wird schnell gefährlich.

When an adjective modifies a masculine or neuter material directly (without an article in front of it), the noun still takes its genitive -s or -es, and the adjective usually takes an -en ending.

By means of the color, I recognize a vessel of deadly poison.
Anhand der Farbe erkenne ich ein Gefäß tödlichen Giftes.

Side-by-Side Comparison

To master gathering your ingredients, pay close attention to whether the material is modified or standing alone. Compare these final examples, noticing when the genitive is triggered by an adjective or a word like dieses, and when the nouns remain a simple apposition.

We need one gram of magical sand and a vial of water.
Wir brauchen ein Gramm magischen Sandes und eine Phiole Wasser.
A vial of this poison costs a thousand euros.
Eine Phiole dieses Giftes kostet tausend Euro.
