Giving reasons with "da"
When you want to explain why you are doing something or justify a choice, you can use the conjunction da (since / because).
Just like weil, da is a subordinating conjunction. This means it introduces a dependent clause and pushes the conjugated verb to the absolute end of that clause.
| I am glad, since the alternative is sustainable. | Ich freue mich, da die Alternative nachhaltig ist. |
| We eat organic fruit, since it does not harm our health. | Wir essen biologisches Obst, da es unserer Gesundheit nicht schadet. |
Starting a sentence with "da"
While da and weil mean almost the exact same thing, da is especially common when the reason is already known to the listener or provides background context, much like the English word "since". Because of this, you will often see sentences that start with the da clause.
When you start a sentence with a dependent clause, remember the "verb, comma, verb" rule: the dependent clause takes up the entire first position of the sentence. To keep its verb in the mandatory second position, the main clause must start immediately with its conjugated verb right after the comma.
| Since plastic harms the environment, we reduce consumption. | Da Plastik der Umwelt schadet, reduzieren wir den Konsum. |
| Since diet is important, we reduce the consumption of meat. | Da die Ernährung wichtig ist, reduzieren wir den Konsum von Fleisch. |
Discussing sustainability
You will often need to provide reasons when discussing modern lifestyle topics like the environment, sustainability, and healthy diets. You can pair da with vocabulary about organic (biologisch) and regional (regional) products to explain your choices.
| Today I prefer eating regional products, since energy is expensive. | Ich esse heute lieber regionale Produkte, da Energie teuer ist. |
| Since we want to stay healthy, we often eat regional vegetables at home. | Da wir gesund bleiben wollen, essen wir oft zu Hause regionales Gemüse. |
