Waiting with bis
Use bis (until) to express doing something until a condition is met.
Like bevor, bis introduces a subordinate clause, pushing the conjugated verb to the very end. Always separate the main clause and the bis clause with a comma.
| We mix the ingredients until we are finished. | Wir mischen die Zutaten, bis wir fertig sind. |
| I stir the ingredients until the dough is ready. | Ich rühre die Zutaten, bis der Teig fertig ist. |
| I knead the dough until it is soft. | Ich knete den Teig, bis er weich ist. |
Separable verbs with bis
When a separable verb goes to the end of a subordinate clause, its prefix does not detach. The two parts stay connected as a single word!
| The yeast helps, but we wait until the dough rises. | Die Hefe hilft, aber wir warten, bis der Teig aufgeht. |
| The cake stays in the pan until it cools down. | Der Kuchen bleibt in der Form, bis er abkühlt. |
