Emphasizing 'none' (ne... aucun)

Emphasizing "None" with ne... aucun

To emphasize the complete absence of something ("no" or "not a single"), French uses the negative structure ne... aucun.

Place ne (or n') before the verb, and put aucun directly before a masculine noun.

You have no equipment.
Tu n'as aucun équipement.

Feminine Agreement: ne... aucune

Because aucun is an adjective, it must agree with the gender of the noun. For feminine nouns like la boussole (the compass), use aucune.

I don't have a single compass in my bag.
Je n'ai aucune boussole dans mon sac.

Declaring "There is no..."

Pair this structure with il y a (there is / there are) to declare that a place is completely empty of an item.

There is not a single trail here.
Il n'y a aucun sentier ici.
There isn't a single water bottle in the camp.
Il n'y a aucune gourde dans le camp.

Wilderness Survival

Use these forms to talk about la survie (survival) or explain why someone might se perdre (get lost).

He is going to get lost because he has no compass.
Il va se perdre parce qu'il n'a aucune boussole.
I have no book on survival.
Je n'ai aucun livre sur la survie.
