How do the suffixes stack up at the end of tasapainotetaankohan?
The suffixes follow a strict structural order: Stem + Passive marker + Tense/Person + Enclitic particles. From the weak stem of tasapainottaa (to balance), we add the passive present endings to get tasapainotetaan (is balanced). Next comes the question enclitic -ko (is balanced?), and finally the softening enclitic -han, which adds the 'I wonder if' nuance.
Can the order of the clitics -ko and -han be reversed?
No, verbal morphotactics in Finnish are very strict. The question particle -ko / -kö always attaches immediately after the verb's personal or passive endings. Other enclitic particles like -han / -hän or -pa / -pä must always attach after -ko.
Why does tasapainottaa lose a 't' to become tasapainotetaan?
This is due to consonant gradation. In Type 1 verbs, forming the passive requires the weak grade of the verb stem. Therefore, the strong -tt- in the dictionary form weakens to a single -t- before the passive suffix.
