Questions & Answers about Yöllinen matelija naamioituu elinympäristöönsä.
Why is elinympäristöönsä in the illative ("into") case here?
The verb naamioitua (to camouflage oneself) takes the illative case when indicating where someone is hiding or blending in. In Finnish spatial logic, you camouflage "into" an environment, so the reptile blends "into its habitat" (elinympäristöönsä).
How does the ending of naamioitua change its meaning compared to the base verb naamioida?
The -utua / -ytyä suffix makes the verb reflexive. While naamioida means to camouflage or mask something else (like an object or a vehicle), naamioitua means to camouflage oneself.
I see the possessive suffix -nsä on elinympäristöönsä, but where did the "n" from the illative ending go?
When adding a possessive suffix to an illative word, the final -n of the illative ending drops out. So elinympäristöön (into the habitat) becomes elinympäristöö- plus the possessive suffix -nsä, resulting in elinympäristöönsä (into its habitat).
How is the word yöllinen formed?
It is derived from the noun yö (night) using the highly productive adjective suffix -llinen, which means "having the quality of" or "related to". Here, it translates perfectly to "nocturnal" or "nighttime".
