Questions & Answers about Vieraat onnittelevat hääparia upeista järjestelyistä.
Why is "upeista järjestelyistä" in the elative (-sta/-stä) case?
This is because of verb rection. The verb onnitella (to congratulate) requires the elative case to express what you are congratulating someone for. While in English you congratulate someone "on" something, in Finnish you use the elative case.
Why is "hääparia" in the partitive case?
The verb onnitella is a partitive verb, meaning the person you are congratulating must always be in the partitive case. Here, the basic word hääpari (wedding couple) gets the partitive ending -a.
How are the endings formed for "upeista järjestelyistä"?
These words are in the plural elative. The basic words are upea (wonderful) and järjestely (arrangement). To make them plural elative, you insert the plural marker -i- before the elative case ending -sta/-stä.
What is the base form of "onnittelevat" and how do we get its stem?
The infinitive is onnitella (to congratulate), which is a type 3 verb. To get the stem of a type 3 verb ending in -lla/-llä, you drop those last two letters and add an -e-. This gives the stem onnittele-, to which we add the "they" ending -vat.
